Dear Friends, I would highly appreciate any info on the titles Clements held. Does anyone recognize the title belt he is wearing around his waist on this photo? Thanks, R
He held a welterweight belt evidently it was a Mountevans belt I wonder if this was it
Thanks for your feedback, appreciate. I think this belt is one of the "old" belts which were owned by Beresford Family. Trying to figure out which title it was, belt has inscription, I can clearly see the word "champion". It does have some similarity with the World Mid-Heavy Belt Marty Jones held. And yet it is different.
Didn't he go off to Mexico and come back as World Middleweight Champion? But he was the biggest middleweight I've seen.
Yes, Hack I have heard about it, I just don't think this particular belt is of Mexican origin I am very familiar with their belts and it doesn't look anything like those they give their champions. Its not a Lucha Libre Belt. This belt looks to me like British Belt from the 1930's. I am still researching it. I would say it was one of many Callaghan's Belts but I don't have any prove of it as of yet.
Wasn't Steve Clements Ted Beresford's son??
I do believe he was
As you can see, the belt over Steve Clements' left shoulder represents a Southern (States of America) championship. This belt is the Southern Tag Team Title, recognised in the state of Tennessee. Clements won the vacant Southern Tag Team Title in partnership with Al Greene (against Jerry Jarrett & Tojo Yamamoto) on 25 August 1971 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.
Clements had managed the previous champions, Al & Don Greene, but an injury to Don Greene caused the brothers to vacate the Southern Tag Team Title.
I cannot identify the belt over Clements' right shoulder. It looks a rather generic strap, in my opinion. The fact that the name plates are not inscribed could indicate that this title belt had yet to be used.
I agree with Ruslan that the belt around Clements' waist is not a championship that was originated in Mexico. It is certainly not the World Welterweight Title belt that was defended in the EMLL (Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre) promotion (today known as CMLL - Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre) in which Clements wrestled decades ago.
I also concur with Ruslan that this belt looks like a very old British strap, probably owned by Ted Beresford . However, it does not appear to be the one of the European Tag Team Championship belts held by the Yorkshire Terriers (Steve Clements & Mick McMichael). The main plates look different to me. For a look at the European Tag Team Championship belts please refer to https://www.wrestlingheritage.co.uk/evergreenandgolden.htm near the bottom on the page.
Ed, thanks, appreciate. This belt totally looks like old British Champion Belt, in a way similar to the the one used by many champs as the holders of Mid Heavy World Title.
