Promoters were always trying to 'dream up' a Creditable MASKED MAN in the lower
weights who could emulate the AMAZING KUNG FU and have a reasonably good 'run'
under the BONNET!!
One such 'Creation' started to appear in DALE MARTIN Rings in the mid '70's who they
were hoping would prove 'a Ray of Sunshine'! Adopting a curious fighting stance this-
probably Middleweight Wrestler was pitched against such Notables as STEVE GREY-
CLIVE MYERS-ROBBY BARON-EDDIE CAPELLI and JOHNNY KWANGO!
We know Who was beneath the HOOD-but did Anyone actually see this 'Mystery'
Man?-Perhaps ANGLO? Did he completely change his Ring Persona from that of his
Alter-Ego as did CLAY THOMSON on HIS Outings as the EXORCIST?
Just WHY is he ranked #20 by HERITAGE in their MASKED WRESTLER Countdown?
Was he more Comical than Serious in his Appearance?
What do we think of this YELLOW STREAK?-Programmes to follow!
MAIN MASK
Yes, I saw The Yellow Streak plenty of times. Chris Bailey had such distinctively pale skin that he was wise to cover up totally.
Chris Bailey could of course wrestle, so Streak's victories over the likes of Steve Grey were valid.
My recollections are that in the beginning he played it very straight as a masked mystery man, villainous.
I think the promoters missed a trick. They didn't realise how seriously we took our masked men, and just considered it same old Chris under the bonnet. They should have built him up more.
But the name alone was a joke, which is a shame. Chris Bailey had the ringcraft to deliver a purposeful performance and character. Am I right that he was never on tv?
His later bouts did indeed turn into a comedy routine and I remember him running through the audience, lots of contact with the punters. This was probably the Big Daddy era when several wrestlers, like Catweazle, threw any semblance of legitimacy out of the window and just tried to entertain.
Very much a case of "what could have been..."
Fascinating 1975 Bank Holiday showing at Wembley for Pasquale Salvo, there. Was that a pure one-off?
