Recently HACK and ANGLO had a little exchange about an erstwhile MASKED
WRESTLER in '70's DALE MARTIN Rings-So thought I would expand on it somewhat!
One of his Appearances was against WAYNE BRIDGES at AYLESBURY and then almost
completely adversely he turns up at WEMBLEY TOWN HALL against of all Wrestlers-
CATWEAZLE!-Interestingly on the latter 4 Bout Bill we find SPENCER CHURCHILL
Refereeing the Contests! Yet another Outing finds him Competing in a 4 Man K.O.
Tournament at SOUTHPORT'S FLORAL HALL!!
i believe ANGLO saw this HOODED MENACE Live but who else Witnessed this TERROR
RAMPAGE of the MAD AXE MAN??- Programmes to follow!
MAIN MASK
I think I now remember why I dismissed the Mad Axeman from my thoughts. I found out he was being unmasked all around the place, and therefore I decided he wasn't credible. Then I just blanked him.
I once saw a Doctor Death in a makeshift ring in a snooker hall - dreadful stuff, successfully forgotten.
Yes I bought one of those John Bull sets in Woolworths about 1960.
There's a point in the mid 1970's where DM seemed to have a bit of a shortage on Letraset, and the type on the programmes gives off a "punk gig flyer" look. Looked a bit haphazard but it worked when they billed the MaD AxEmAN.
I saw The Mad Axeman once as part of a four man K.O. tournament at Liverpool Stadium. It was one of Max Crabtree's early shows there and his brother Shirley faced The Mad Axeman in the first contest. I recall him being quite a weedy guy, much lighter than Crabtree who soon pinned and unmasked him. I did not recognise him but recall being told that, without the bonnet, he worked as "Gypsy" Joe Romero. Just out of interest, Kendo Nagasaki beat Mike Marino in the second bout leaving a Nagasaki/Crabtree final. In supporting bouts Honey Boy Zimba made short work of Peter Kaye and, in the longest bout of the night by a long stretch, Mal Crossley did six cats with Eric (Smut) Smith.
Robby Baron was a six-foot light-heavyweight from about 1970 but the promoters continued to have Young Robby of seven years earlier in mind and continually billed him in odd-looking bouts against tiny opponents like Julien Morice. Whenever he wrestled McManus, he would bend over most of the time to disguise the height difference.
The penny finally dropped when he partnered Steve Viedor in tag at the RAH ... after which he disappeared.
Mad Axeman partnered Kendo Nagasaki in one of the earliest full-fledged Big Daddy tag matches in 1977. It ended with Naggers walking out in disgust and leaving the Axeman to be mercilessly Daddied.
I missed that one.
It was just after he went on the Robby Baron diet.
Since when was Catweasle a heavyweight.
Did Robby Baron really turn into a heavyweight that could face Dave Bond in the 1970s? Surely not.
