Wrestling in LONDON in the 1960's had its little Cliques and Coteries of Fighters
all hailing from the same Area of the Capital!
One such Borough was BERMONDSEY which boasted at least 3 Top Wrestlers from
its Avenues and Alleyways!
'SAILOR TUG' HOLTON- Found Boxing before becoming a Wrestler TUG boasted a great
Amateur Record which included Bouts against BRIAN LONDON and HENRY COOPER!
Progressing from Wrestling's Amateur Ranks into the Paid Profession-HOLTON had a
preference for Tag Team Combat-but never seemed to end up in a Settled Team!
The 'DAZZLER' Himself-JOE CORNELIUS -was a Physical Training Instructor in the Army
before entering the Paid Ranks of Wrestling-but he was so Popular-he had Interests in many
pies including Show Business and his own Ventures!-JOE couldn't turn his back completely
on the Grappling Game and Fought on to late 1967!
'DOCKER' DON STEADMAN- a Muscular Athlete started out early in the Wrestling at the
age of just 18-but still 15 Stone!! Very early on in his Career he Wrestled the Great BERT
ASSIRATI and Travelled extensively on the International Circuit
Didn't they All do well-These BERMONDSEY BOYS??
MAIN MASK
Very hard to know where these south-east Londoners all came really from. North London just didn't exist as we discussed many moons ago, with Elijah, Pallo and northerner Rann the only ones of note.
Tony Skarlo was also billed from Bermondsey, probably Joey, too.
Steve Logan was occasionally billed from there.
I imagine the Maltese twins also lived somewhere in the vicinity?
Tug Holton was always billed from Waterloo, in my time. I always used to wonder "which platform?"
Dave Bond got Deptford, which is next door.
Hard to know whether any of their billed home towns were actually real.
