in the thread " something for everybody" Sax said " we were not used to much mic work". relating to Quinn.
That made me think. When was the first time you heard a wrestler use the mic either before or after a bout?
I don't mean a wrestler acting as referee announcing falls etc. but one in a fight.
Yes I remember Ian Campbell, decipherable in Lancashire. giving some epilogue after a match with Kumali. Also some gushing comments by Dennison about Flash Jordan.
I have mentioned previously that Ian Campbell usually had something to say at the end of his bout; generally something positive regarding his opponent. Having fought Earl Maynard he stated that he would refuse to wrestle in any country that practised apartheid and after a bout against Josef Zaranoff he praised Russia for issuing a postage stamp commemorating Robert Burns. At the end of the last show of 1965 he wished the crowd a Happy New Year. Dennis Mitchell was also known to use the microphone but usually to disagree with some aspect of his opposite number's tactics.
I can recall Alan Garfield taking the microphone after he had been disqualified against "Dazzler" Joe Cornelius, stating it was a diabolical decision to disqualify a "sportsman" such as himself and the verdict was a disgrace. His comments were, predictably, not welcomed by the crowd, but the result was a further bout against Cornelius, which of course had been the intention. This was in the early 1960's.
The remark by Sax reminded me of when Jack Pye challenged The Ghoul to go another round after a 10 round draw.
The date was 12/1/1952.
You see folks there's nothing new in general nowadays , only variations on a theme.
I'm sure the Americans would probably have done this previously.
I seem to remember Jim Breaks trying to grab the microphone from the MC to argue about a result. Must have been early to mid 70's.
Jim Armstrong from Leeds was a regular user of the mic, once his bout had finished especially if there was a discrepancy over the result of his contest, even to the degree that they could hardly get the mic off him or even getting him out of the ring. Regards Les. 💪
Dave Finlay was the first coherent one i heard. It was during his feud with Big Daddy. He took to the mic to say what a disgrace it was that Mike Bennet had cheated for Daddys team.
