Okay, this has been in the headlines recently:
It got me thinking - does anyone know any stories of the boys making their way to and from shows at the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena etc etc via London Underground? Anyone tubed it to a big London show and found themselves sharing a carriage with someone on the bill?
(This could be extended to Merseyrail, the Tyneside Metro, Glasgow Underground etc etc. Maybe someone has gone on holiday to Gay Paris and seen a catcheur or two Metro-ing it to an Elysee Montmatre show.)
Once sat opposite Steve Logan on the train from Victoria to Croydon which must count as there is no underground in that part of South London
I once met Mike Marino in the cafeteria queue at what is now Lancaster Services on the M6.
I asked him where he had wrestled that night but he told me he was just visiting friends.
Sadly, his death was announced not long after.
Not Underground, but I ran across Pat Roach in Glasgow Central station having presumably just got off a train from Brum. Absolute gent, shook his hand and welcomed him, then he asked "Now, where can I get a taxi here?" I directed him straight out to the rank on Gordon Street.
Not Likely John. Too lightweight ...Then!
Bernard, you may have missed a chance in a lifetime! You arrive at the Stadium with Geoff, the evening's promoter thrusts a pair of tights and two black boots at you and exclaims breathlessly, "Quick, Dai's not turned up, you're on with Jack" you, in a daze, say, "Jack who"? Promoter replies "Pye" of course".
Such are the missed opportunities of life.😪
Met Rikki Starr at Hamilton Square,Birkenhead. He was appearing at the local Sports Centre for Wrestling Enterprise(later All Star Proms) .Found him very pleasant, cultured man.
A bit off rail but when Brian London fouhgt Ali at Earls Court he travelled there by tube. I never saw a catcheur on the Mtro but they all (well some of them) congregated for lunch at a cafe next to the Elysee before the Sunday afternoon wrestling and often in a cafe after the evening show at the Cirque.
I was going on a date in London. Going down on the escalator, I saw Geoff Portz coming up towards me. He managed to say that he was on his way to Brighton, did I want to come.
Not possible.
