Here's a question for you to have a go at.
This photo was sent to us by the wrestling son of one of the wrestlers in the photo. There's a story behind the photo which we will tell when you've had a go at guessing who he three wrestlers are.
Who are they?
Where were you Mac? Just when we needed you.
John Mitchell writes:
Back in the fifties when wrestling was not allowed by law to take place on Sunday
the lads from round the Bradford area would throw a Christmas party for their kids but would also invite a local orphanage.
One year ( 57-58 I think) whoever was supposed to be Father Christmas didn’t turn up so they asked for a volunteer.
In the background is my dad also Eric Taylor but the fella on the mike may have been Ted Beresford .The one dressed up is Massambula. HA HA.
Masambula was the first name that came to mind for Santa from the eyes.
You got it in just three, or was it four, William. Just playing with us at the end there were you not?
How anyone could have recognised him we don't know. We didn't.
We will return with the story behind the photo later today.
Unfortunately William due to Covid-19 we are unable to offer our customary one million pound prize money this year. Nevertheless we thank you, Ron, Jacko and bkendo for playing along and hope you have a good very small Christmas - a one day event.
Can’t be Les Kellett - never a Champion, nor Don Branch. Eric Taylor?
The town is right Jacko, but ours was a champion a few years earlier though there was overlap. Answer tomorrow if no one gets it, but many of you should.
Jim Breaks
No, not Geoff Portz. A champion of many years.
Geoff Portz? But he was from nearby Shipley.
Forgot. Well done Ron.
Yes, Dennis Mitchell and Masambula. The one with his back is also from Bradford, well known to the likes of us, well respected.
So big guy is Dennis Mitchell , could father Christmas be Masambula.
Thanks Ron, but not Gregory or Foderingham.
Okay, here's a clue; we don't want it to drag on and want others to feel as though they can have a stab.
The photo was sent in by John Mitchell.
That should help you find one, but one of the others is just about impossible. So, second clue is that two of them are from the same town.
Here's a clue surnames a belter for the guy at rear.
I think we are all stumped.
The detective in me thinks circa 1960 and the big guy at the back , I will try Francis StClair Gregory.
Father Christmas , I would guess Grant Foderingham.
T'other guy not really showing his face.
