A reincarnation of this traditional masked name was launched in Weaste late 70s.He appeared on TV thousands of times and only had four bouts, had a film made about, has plaques on walls yet remains unknown under the bonnet.Any ideas I'll give it a few days.

Great story, I wonder if the lads from "New Order" ever knew?
Ron the initial bout was at the Willows Salford rlfc and he was made to look good with the idea he'd unmask undefeated get in the papers all good fun for several charities however he didn't unmask and appeared to have got the bug and did a handful of bouts all for independent promoters one I think he Co promoted which I remember rightly was in the new century Hall
His last bout he got a shoulder injury and immediately stopped. All odd because the publicity of this grand frontmanl wrestling Would have been good but kept a closely guarded secret only one journalist knew the renowned Andrew Grimes and he was a wrestling fan anyway.tony was well aware what was about to happen on that TV show but was under the misapprehension that Pat Roach was going to kick off. I must get rid off this bag too many cats escaping.

Paul , you say just a few bouts , were they charity , where or who against.
Did they fix it so he did not lose.
It was hard to prove his link to wrestling.
You push my detective powers to the limit.
Brilliant stuff.
Well done Ron yes indeed Anthony H did a handful of bouts as The Red Devil, initially introduced by Tommy Many so had a few rudimentary moves didn't unmask he had a long term interest in the game.
You might have a chuckle at my connection with Wrestling and Tony Wilson.

The title says REALLY FAMOUS. It sounds to me that it's someone who followed in the footsteps of Jimmy Savile.
Engelbert Humperdink.
I have thought long and hard to convince myself that this could be valid.
Last throw of the dice.........TONY WILSON
No Adrian wrong Salford grammar school but good guess with the Whit lane bookies son,I think Ron has got it, if not I'll give you 24 hour people before the unmasking.
Was this guy partly from the world of pop Music
I won't drag this out I promise,Ron nah not Pete sorry I slightly mislead you this grammar school boy wasn't from Weaste he debuted there,Sax your on the right lines,no Anglo Poor Paul Luty is an unknown compared to this guy who was known in many spheres.
I'll take a guess at Paul Luty, but this is one of our most cryptic clues!
This sounds like it could be someone who was famous for something else "....He appeared on TV thousands of times and only had four bouts, had a film made about, has plaques on walls yet remains unknown under the bonnet...."
So, someone who had a film made about them, some whose name appears on plaques on walls and appeared regularly on TV.
Interesting!
Although there were a lot of wrestlers in Salford , I can't really break it down as to who lived in Weaste. I have a mate who lived over the road from Les Thornton , but he was in USA by then.
My other problem is that I stopped going by 1978 so it is one of them , that you either know it or you don't.
Plaques on walls , a good clue , but just won't click.
The clue kind of puts me off a wild guess .......Peter Stewart.
