For SC4 Reslo was a winner because it fulfilled its obligation to provide Welsh programming but also attracted non Welsh speaking viewers including visitors from outside Wales
That was the whole point of Reslo and it's broadcasting channel S4C Peter. To encourage and promote the national language of Wales. If Orig Williams had just wanted to air a wrestling series he could have gone to the already established independent Welsh channel HTV Wales and tried to promote his wares there, but being a Welsh speaker himself he wanted to not only promote wrestling but also the Welsh language and it worked. Timing was everything as if S4C had begun around 10 years earlier in the 1970s then he may not have had a programme because it was debatable whether he and the other Independent promoters had the quality in wrestlers that came their way in the early 1980s.
For me at least, the language barrier didn't detract from the sport, much like watching bouts from Germany, France and Japan on Youtube in their native language doesn't spoil my viewing either. Having lived part of my childhood in South Wales i now only wish that i had taken more interest in my secondary school Welsh lessons and broadened my view, especially as i'm married to a French/German language Teacher.
Reslo had a consistently high standard of matches but still finished by 1994.Also most of its viewers in Wales could not understand the commentary bearing in mind only one in five inhabitants speak Welsh to any depth
Very sad indeed!
I often wonder what would have happened if ITV had picked up any of the European Wrestling shows that ended up on Eurosport (from France and Germany, on Satellite TV, which featured many UK wrestlers), or maybe if Channel 4 had picked up Reslo from S4C (which only needed English language commentary adding), would British Wrestling have survived in it's Saturday afternoon spot?
