Talking of Jackie Pallo signing autographs, I recall him telling the story of a not infrequent long drive home after a bout (he preferred driving and then sleeping in his own bed to staying overnight after a bout and setting off back home in the morning) and pulling in to a motorway services station in order to visit the toilets where he felt the need to sit down in one of the cubicles. After a few moments he saw a hand appearing under the door with an autograph book and a pen with a voice calling, "Sign this for us will you mate?"
I forget the punch line as to whether or not Jackie signed it but I do recall that he thought the whole thing was a bit of a liberty. Goodness knows what he would have made of today's glory holes!
Incidentally, although the photo of Barnes versus Ramsden is obviously from a Max Crabtree show (Bryan as referee gives it away), the only time I saw Ramsden wrestle was in the opening bout of a King's Hall, Belle Vue, show in the early seventies and his opponent then was Barnes. This was a Morrell and Beresford show and the bout finished abruptly just a short while into the second round when Barnes KO'd Ramsden with a mighty forearm smash. To this day, as a punter and then promoter, I really don't see what the point of this match-up was. A handful of the regulars were just making their way to their usual seats from the bar to hear the less than friendly Ernie Lofthouse announcing the result of the opening contest.
See Kellett and Logan in their "Heavweight" bout?
Otherwise poor matchmaking: Bobby needed to switch opponents to take on Tont St Clair.
I hope there was some creativity that night with the various tag partners interfering in the singles bouts, all leading to a great tag-match challenge. There probably wasn't, we see all to often that bouts were conceived in 25-minute isolation bubbles. No thinking outside the box.
The end result of ink on paper is not the sole point of autograph hunting. The chase always obsessed me. But it was those moments up close and personal with the wrestlers that were great.
Getting Mal Kirk all alone led to a long conversation in which he asked me about his work. I was gobsmacked.
Bobby was so serene. Trying to straddle a line between being his normal self yet maintaining some semblance of his in-ring persona. He remained tight-lipped - but in his case, his lips were very expressive, a feature of his. I got his autograph multiple times on lots of photos, always with my black felt pen. So glad now that I went to all that bother with the black felt pen (except when Pallo said "This is nice, I'll keep it.")
Signed the most wonderful autograph!
Agreed. Just wish there was some decent footage around!
As a youngster, the "Hell's Angels" were a really exciting tag team.
Yeah I guess he must be. Top wrestler definitely in my top 5 in his younger years.
Keep well Bobby. How old is BB now?
Great wrestler. I love his bouts with Kellet.
