Talking of Jackie Pallo signing autographs, I recall him telling the story of a not infrequent long drive home after a bout (he preferred driving and then sleeping in his own bed to staying overnight after a bout and setting off back home in the morning) and pulling in to a motorway services station in order to visit the toilets where he felt the need to sit down in one of the cubicles. After a few moments he saw a hand appearing under the door with an autograph book and a pen with a voice calling, "Sign this for us will you mate?"
I forget the punch line as to whether or not Jackie signed it but I do recall that he thought the whole thing was a bit of a liberty. Goodness knows what he would have made of today's glory holes!
Incidentally, although the photo of Barnes versus Ramsden is obviously from a Max Crabtree show (Bryan as referee gives it away), the only time I saw Ramsden wrestle was in the opening bout of a King's Hall, Belle Vue, show in the early seventies and his opponent then was Barnes. This was a Morrell and Beresford show and the bout finished abruptly just a short while into the second round when Barnes KO'd Ramsden with a mighty forearm smash. To this day, as a punter and then promoter, I really don't see what the point of this match-up was. A handful of the regulars were just making their way to their usual seats from the bar to hear the less than friendly Ernie Lofthouse announcing the result of the opening contest.
