No, I am not saying he "invented" anything, BUT he was a Lancashire catch pro wrestler in the 1840s and 50s...which is before Bibby or Chambers.

As wrestling is the worlds oldest sport apart from walking and running it is probably the case that catch existed in Lancashire in one form or another a thousand years ago

Agree Ruslan , too many false claims. You are looking at the best part of 200 years now , and not so sure it could ever be pinned to one man.

Ridings of course was the first great champ.

Ron, thank you, yes of course Adam Ridings of Bury, Lancs was the first great star who was known all around the country as the champ wrestler in Lancashire style of wrestling.

He was a symbol of the "first generation" of Lancashire catch pro wrestlers.

Regarding "inventing something". Lancashire catch-as-catch-can is a folk or traditional style of wrestling which is culturally unique to the people of East Lancashire (town of Wigan + the towns of Bolton-Bury-Middleton-Rochdale-Oldham-Ashton of the former Salford Hundred of Lancashire County and towns of the former Blackburn Hundred as well) and West Riding of Yorkshire (from the border with Lancashire all the way to Bradford, Yorks and even a little further to the East Dewsbury-Batley areas). This cannot be "invented"...it's part of their cultural and ethnic identity. It's like me asking who invented the Italian or French Cuisine...????
