A Tragicomedy "Catch Was Invented By...", by Unknown. Or The Birth of Catch Wrestling.
Dear Friends,
just found this "priceless pearl" online (link below):
https://sites.google.com/site/allaboutbibby/prominent-bibbys/edwin-bibby
"His son Tom said he had sent, or taken, the silver belt that Edwin had won home to Lancashire and deposited it in a museum. He also said that Edwin claimed that he had invented the 'Catch-as-Catch-Can' style. His great granddaughter, Jean Mauro nee Bibby, said that on a visit to England she stayed in a friend's apartment at Prince Albert's Court in London where Edwin had once performed before Queen Victoria. I think she meant The Albert Hall."
No, that's not all, here's another "pearl", or may be even "diamond" (???), link below as well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_wrestling
"Catch wrestling is a classical hybrid grappling style and combat sport. It was developed by J. G. Chambers in Britain c. 1870."
NOTE: J.G. Chambers a Londoner of Welsh descent.
I wished Adam Ridings was still around Ron...Can they CLONE him please? Just to settle this dispute...
No, I am not saying he "invented" anything, BUT he was a Lancashire catch pro wrestler in the 1840s and 50s...which is before Bibby or Chambers.
Thanks,
Russian Concussion.
As wrestling is the worlds oldest sport apart from walking and running it is probably the case that catch existed in Lancashire in one form or another a thousand years ago
Agree Ruslan , too many false claims. You are looking at the best part of 200 years now , and not so sure it could ever be pinned to one man.
Ridings of course was the first great champ.
