The tribute in this weeks newsletter to JoeD'Orazio mentioned his taking over from Charles Mascall in the Dale Martin set up and that got me thinking again about a question that I asked on here some years ago. Who was Charles Mascall? Back in the 50's young fans like myself learned just about everything we knew about wrestling history from this man's writing. But he remains a bit of a mystery. Where did he come from? How did he come to be involved with Dale Martin? Was he an ex wrestler? He just seems to have appeared as a fully formed wrestling expert in the post-war years. Someone must know something.

Sorry Robert , I don't have the Maskell Lists
Hi Ron Can you please print an article on Charles Maskells top Heavyweights? The list was done some years ago. I have tried Dave Cameron here in NZ but he has it lost somewhere among st all his Wrestling History Memorabilia
Before the war he lived at Downtown Avenue in Wandsworth and even then was a journalist. Born 1915.
He was the editor of Combat magazine in the late 40's, and then Arena which was only published in 1950. After that it seems he took over the publicity for the wider Joint Promotions network. In the early 1950's Norman Morrell's "Mat" magazine became the format for the daily wrestling programmes instead, with Mascall editing those. I would love to know how those changes took place. Apparently he had an amazing wrestling office in London with photos and correspondence from wrestlers & wrestling offices from all over the world.
I did hear a rumour that he was the original Charles Atlas but had to retire after a groin injury
