I have a taxi driver who is self-employed and I call upon him regularly to take me various places. He knows me as a jazz promoter as that is what I have been doing for the past thirty years. However, somehow, the other day the topic of professional wrestling came up and I mentioned that I had promoted wrestling for eleven years between 1976 - 1987.
That led to him telling me that his oldest customer, a Mr.Mac.Tavish from Alderley Edge who is 96, used to be a professional wrestler and worked as Chic Povey. He has quite a broad accent and Purvey could easily be confused with Povey. The age would be about right as well but your information on Chic Purvey informs us that he died in 1996 at the age of 69.
The taxi driver believed he was telling me the truth. It is probably Mr.Mac.Tavish fantasising in his twilight years. However, I didn't think there would be any harm in running it past you and seeing if there are any takers. Could there be some grain of truth somewhere in any of this? The driver passed on some anecdotes that Mr.Mac.Tavish had shared with him that certainly showed that he had some knowledge of the game.
I haven't seen my taxi driver friend for a while but this has possibilities. Harvey/Purvey. Mc.Kay/Mc.Tavish. Mobberley/Alderley Edge.
