Up and down fight was just an unregulated fight for prize-money, no it was nothing like modern day MMA, because such barbarous things as gouging, biting and kicking a helpless person when they are on the ground were part of it. None of these is allowed in MMA. Pro-wrestling obviously is (and always was) a showcase, but yeah, it does (and always did) have some "rules" too, like you couldn't punch with the fist and etc. some other non-wrestling acts were always prohibited in it.

Thanks for your comment, the invitations were sent everywhere around the country including Cornwell, also besides that they all communicated through newspapers back then. The Cornish asked way, way, too many questions about the tourney rules and conditions before making their decision of not competing there. They had to wrestle in shoes just like the English do. That was a NOGO for them. I personally read the whole entire correspondence between the Cornish wrestlers and the organizers of the 1828 Leeds Tourney.
