What a good idea to out a theory to the test in this way, Main Mask. One of the few historical aspects we can definitely judge on 60 years later.
I wasn't making any comment about "northern" bills or promoters. We had been discussing northerner Relwyskow and elsewhere had discussed delightful Woodhouse presentation. This was solely about Morrell bills.
Certainly colour is thoughtfully deployed in the above bills. And as you say, the spelling is often haywire what with Gwynn and Gilmore in addition to what you mentioned.
Funnily enough, the above Morrell bills are far more balanced and have preliminary bouts; unlike the ones I had previously criticised for having too many top bouts and not providing a breeding ground for new talent to break through. Maybe Morrell thought that only venues in his own county were worthy of those excesses?
Back on topic, certainly colourful and presentable bills. But by comparison with Geo del Rel's in Beid and Hull they come across as skinny, with little detail, little interest, little respect for the potential punters. No rounds, no weights, few towns mentioned.
By comparison, give me Relwyskow's any day of the week in terms of presentation.
Thanks Ian for your memories.
As I said, I remember that all of the bills on the outside wall of St.James Hall were horizontal in the 1950's.
Keep safe yourself.
Hi Bernard, like yourself, i never saw any vertical handbills at all for newcastle. Ihave most of the proper programmes from about 1962 onwards & the hand bills only came with the programme when Morrell changed to Horizontal.
Kind regards and keep well, Ian
Thanks for trying MM.
In the 1950's the format was landscape and the writing was red and green on a white background.
The top of the bill was generally across the top of the bill;the 2nd fight was across the bottom and the 2 supporting bouts were often half size squares across the middle portion.
I never saw a Newcastle bill in portrait form..
I wonder if Ian Pringle remembers these.
I would think that if they are not in someone's collection, then we will never see them.
Next we have another 4 Bout Show-Featuring the Main Bout and THE PROFESSOR-A Villain Clad from Top to Toe in RED against Journeyman
REG. WILLIAMS! and BOBBY STEELE Travels NORTH from MANCHESTER!
