Peter, yes, in the 1800s they had 3 kinds of pro wrestling in England. Lancs, Cornish and Cumberland. So to speak they had 3 pro wrestling champions. Around 1870 they introduced a unified English national style of wrestling and called it CATCH HOLD. One country one champion, it was a brilliant idea, plus it was based on historical English wrestling traditions.
Rules: standing catch hold above the waist, tripping allowed, first down to lose. The first champion catch hold wrestler of England was William Snape of Lostock, Bolton, Lancs. The last champion of England was George Steadman famous Cumbrian Back-Holder.
