Dave fit Finley, one of the very best, yet I dont think Ive ever seen another wrestler who refused to sell the other wrestlers moves as much as he did. He was notorious for refusing to take a posting and making the other guy look stupid, he clearly enjoyed dominating a match as can be seen on many of his YouTube fights. I think most of us agree he took an absolute liberty with The black prince (also on YouTube) basically just beating him up for the whole fight and giving him absolutely nothing. I admire, respect and enjoy Dave Finley's fights no end but I think he was a bit of a bully and unfair to lesser wrestlers.
Where there any other wrestlers like this?
One for the purists then ... Thanks very much for the answers my friend. Nice one.
Murphy & Finley doubled up on Rocco . Rocco went around back stage & came back with a plank of wood cutting Finley s head open . Rocco lay in to Finley. Mal mason stopped the match due to Finley s cut head
I envy you! How did it pan out. Was it as exciting as Rocco v Jones, Dynamite kid etc?
Rocco
I was at Leicester and saw Finley get beat up by
Finley came to prominence when the "Golden Era "was well and truly over. His name on the bill kept many fans attending live events. The matches versus Collins were oft repeated well into the 19990s but usually seemed fresh and brutal
Paula did her job beautifully, annoying just about everyone in the hall and making Dave look like the arcetypal henpecked husband. She was even better than George Gillette.
Suprised you think Dave's match with The Black Prince wasn't brutal Saxonwolf, the poor bloke was made to look like a complete fool from start to finish, he even started to lost the trousers to his Gi at one point! Finley gave him nothing and threw him around like a rag doll. Even Kent Walton was trying to save his face by saying things like 'I bet he wishes he could use some of his Karate moves' Dunno what happed to make Finley behave like that and maybe The Black Prince deserved it but in my eyes it was a bit unfair to be so hard on a wrestler who was clearly still finding his feet in the grappling world, especially as it was his TV debute.
£100, A chip buttie and a pair of my used underpants to anyone on here who can point me in the direction of any Rocco v Finley fights.
Agreed. I saw him live in the early eighties and he was fantastic, with Princess Paula accompanying her then husband to the ring.
The Black Prince match is not as brutal as Finlay makes it look, he is a master craftsman after all. He even does the part where the opponent (in this case, Black Prince) loses his cool and wants to retaliate, and Finlay does the cowardly "let's all calm down routine".
Finlay was one of the best, no doubt about it.
I had come to the same conclusion as you about Streiger , Frank , and we were debating him on here. I never saw him sell and yet he was the perfect foil for some guys , I found a bout in the early 1960's in the paper where Ian Campbell got angered and took him to the cleaners.
They all had to do it.
I would have agreed with you about Finlay , but I saw this video only this week and it opened my eyes.
Thank you Ron, dont think Ive seen that one so that was a nice treat. Don't get me wrong I loved watching Dave and he's most definatly in my top 5 and probably top 3. You're absolutely right he seems as hard as nails and is indeed a top draw pro who goes in hard.
Cant think why Rocco had a reputation as being reckless ... and really would have loved to see these two having a good ole tear up, maybe one day something will turn up.
As for the Black Pince fight I did hear (I think on one of Steve Regal's excellent podcasts) that Dave took a disliking to him and decided he'd give him a bit of a going over. You've no doubt seen The Fit Finleys documentry where Dave says he liked to break the thumbs of anyone who asked him if wrestling was real. Who knows if he ever did but I certainly won't be making enquires!
Thanks again for putting the fight up.
I know what you mean Frank and he is a very hard man. However I will attempt to change your mind , and that he was a great pro.
Have a look at his selling in this video to a much lighter man.
I have heard his work looked real but he was not reckless to work with which some accuse Rocco of.
Agree he gave Prince nothing , why ....who knows.
