I fondly remember Ernest Lofthouse as the MC at Norman Morrell's sole London promotion the Lime Grove Baths in Shepherds Bush West London. Always immacuately attired his rather dour style ws fully atuned to pthe austere Lime Grove atmosphere- this was far removed from the glamour of a Paul Lincoln presentation. Ernest, I recall opened the final bout by commenting "This is the concluding contest of the tournament.
Even by the standard of the 1960's proceedings under Ernest at Lime Grove appeared dated.Nevertheles the venue attracted top class Northern wrestlers, some of whom were rarely seen live in London, and was rewarded with a near to capacity crowd.
Lime Grove was a rather quirky place as some segments of the crowd took to cheering "heels" a phenomenon I rarely witnessed elsewhere. This support became even more vocal when Alan Garfield made an appearance, graciously acknowledging his supporters as he made his imperious entrance into the ring. None of this unusual behaviour flustered Ernest Lofthouse, always the professional.
