Forgotten Chapter. George Gregory The Last Champion of Lancashire.

few months ago I started discussion on Heritage Forum on G. Gregory wrestling background. And of course I continued my research. All the special thanks go to British Library of course.

Here's what I have.

George Gregory of Lostock, near Bolton was Lancashire County Amateur Wrestling Association (LCAWA) welter-weight amateur catch-as-catch-can champion and the holder of the gold and silver 11st 4lb Champion Challenge Belt in 1928 and 1929. Among other famous LCAWA champs were Harry Pennington and of course Joe Reid. Both of them held similar looking championship belts. Besides that achievement G. Gregory was also the winner of the Northern Counties Olympic Trials in 1928.

35th Annual Police Sports at Wigan were held on Summer Bank Holiday Monday Aug 6th, 1928 at Springfield Park Football Ground in Wigan. Welter-weight Amateur Wrestling Championship of Lancashire was won by G. Gregory of Lostock.

36th Annual Police Sports at Wigan were held on Summer Bank Holiday, Monday Aug 5th, 1928 at Springfield Park Football Ground in Wigan. Welter-weight Amateur Wrestling Championship of Lancashire was won by G. Gregory of Lostock.

In both cases the runner-up of knock-out tourney was Thomas Birchall of Ince. Newspapers called Gregory A Rugged Boltonian.

1928 Olympic Trials.

Northern Counties Team was based on the results of the elimination series in following weight classes.

Bantam-weight: E. Jones of Radcliffe

Feather-weight: H. Angus of Doncaster

Light-weight: J. Ryan of Bolton

Welter-weight: G. Gregory of Lostock

In addition to all that.

In 1931 and 1932 George Gregory wins LCAWA Heavyweight championship. Thus becoming the last heavyweight champion wrestler of Lancashire in the catch as catch can style of wrestling.
