Guy Mercier one of the leading French Professional Wrestlers of the 1960s/1970s has died in France. He has several excellent matches on You Tube but one of his last is a Eurosport tag match versus Ian Gilmour and Dave Finlay in one of his first TV matches.
He was father of Marc Mercier who has a very good World of Sport match versus Marty Jones in 1988 also on You Tube
I suppose APC consider themselves the biggest because they are based in Paris
APC is a New School/Americanised promotion founded in 2004. Like ICWA and others, it's the French equivalent of FWA /LDN/ whatever the latert hip Americanised promotion is. I would be sceptical of the claim that they are the biggest promotion. I wonder who said so - themselves?
FFCP (1960s-1980s) and Wrestling Stars/IWSF are/were the French equivalents of Joint and All Star. (FFCP since Roger Delaporte's death is the French equivalent of John Freemantle's Premier Promotions).
Unfortunately they hate each others' guts more than they do the New Schoolies or American invaders, which somehwat hobbles the surviving French old school scene in the C21st.
APC run by Fausto Costantino is now the biggest promotion in Paris with regular events in the upmarket suburb Nanterre
Marc Mercier also owns Roger Delaporte's old FFCP and has a long runnning and bitter promotional war with the IWSF aka Wrestling Stars, owned by another familiar face from both ITV and French TV, Jacky Richard.
Should he have a place in "the Final Count"? Not sure if he ever had matches in the UK but he certainly met our wrestlers in the ring in France and has become quite well known here due to his You Tube appearances
RIP Guy Mercier.
