Cracking picture of some great advertising. Lots of Florrie Ford on Youtube , long career. Could not resist reminding you that there was another Hackenschmidt real name henry O,Brien and also a regular Gaiety Theatre for wrestling in the Golden age.
Hi guys! I'm not sure that the picture does depict 'run down'. A reproduction of an old black and white photograph from around 1904, doesn't necessarily do the subject justice? The Gaiety Theatre seen here, was built some 14 years before, later becoming the Empire Theatre in 1912. This one was in Chatham in Kent and was one of many 'Gaiety's' that existed back in the day.
I think that the halls varied a lot. Some a bit posh and some just like pubs. There is a great book about the halls written by,of all people, John Major. "My Old Man" . What is interesting for us is how even in those early days ,wrestling was considered as much down market show biz as sport.

Interesting how old and rundown venues looked old and run down in their heyday.
There were so many music halls, I imagine they were more akin to pubs than fancy theatres.
