There is some later footage of Haystacks in Bath where he is certainly a blue-eye. In one contest the crowd are cheering him against a villainous Marty Jones.
I do wonder how things might have been if, instead of Daddy being set up as the principal conqueror of Quinn, we'd seen a blue-eye(ish) turn from Stax. I imagine audiences would have cheered him in on the way that, in later years, they backed him against Kendo. And it surely would have been a bit more credible than seeing Mighty John going down to Shirley?
It so nearly happened in 1979. A televised 4 man tournament saw Haystacks and Quinn in the final, but they shook hands, shared the tournament win and became tag partners. I was surprised to see Stax as Crusher Brannigan's final televised opponent a few years later. Thought that would have been Shirley for sure. Not a great contest and the crowd sided with Brannigan.
It did me at the time. The contest may have been 3 minute rounds though. Also on Youtube is what looked like a good 6 man tag match from Austria featuring the team of Quinn, Haystacks & Kirk .v. the Austrian team of Wanz, Wallas & Schuman. The Haystacks team are billed as AMERICAN !!!! and Quinn is billed as Alaskan and stated to be around 70 lbs lighter in weight than he actually is! Stax is interviewed prior to the contest and and heard to say "Us Americans." Not we Americans lol.
I don't usually like 6 man tag contests but this looks a cracker apart from the fact that it is so badly edited. If it's ever glued together correctly it'll be entertaining. There's also a 90 minute interview on Youtube (mostly in German) which includes Quinn, among others discussing wrestling in Europe. Quinn, keeping in character at all times states he's in wrestling to break bones.
They faced each other a few times in the European Tournaments also in Blighty & Ireland during the late 1980s. I believe Haystacks went 10 rounds of a World Title challenge against Quinn here before being stopped with a cut head. The two also opposed each other during a tour of Ireland in a series of tag matches. Quinn's partner was Mal Kirk and Haystacks partner was none other than Tony St. Clair.
I do believe that that both Quinn & Haystacks appeared on Irelands Late, Late Show hosted by Gaye Byrne as a promotional feature.

Two-minute rounds?
Haystacks in a 10 rounder? That suprises me!
