I do wonder how things might have been if, instead of Daddy being set up as the principal conqueror of Quinn, we'd seen a blue-eye(ish) turn from Stax. I imagine audiences would have cheered him in on the way that, in later years, they backed him against Kendo. And it surely would have been a bit more credible than seeing Mighty John going down to Shirley?
It so nearly happened in 1979. A televised 4 man tournament saw Haystacks and Quinn in the final, but they shook hands, shared the tournament win and became tag partners. I was surprised to see Stax as Crusher Brannigan's final televised opponent a few years later. Thought that would have been Shirley for sure. Not a great contest and the crowd sided with Brannigan.
