For the past several months I've been researching the history of pro wrestling in Barcelona, Spain. Since 1946 every summer in Barcelona there would be regular wrestling events held at Plaza de toros de las Arenas (capacity: 14,893) and Plaza de toros Monumental (capacity: 19,582). Throughout the years a number of British stars wrestled there, including Butcher Johnson, Bert Royal, Tommy Mann, Johnny Kwango, Jackie Pallo, etc. I'm up to 1960 in my research and that year saw more Brits work the big Barcelona bullring shows than usual. Here are some photos from the 1960 Barcelona press. I thought you guys might enjoy these. Ian Campbell, Chic Purvey & Clayton Thomson:
George Gordienko, Al Hayes & John Foley:
Billy Robinson:
Bob Anthony:
If that sort of thing interests you, you can follow my Barcelona research over on WrestlingClassics as I post it. http://wrestlingclassics.com/.ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=005222
It must be my bad eyesight, the man in the suit looks bald/shaven headed to me, which is why I couldn't see it being big George, but happy to be proved wrong.
Thank you the Ost. Just to muddy the waters even further: the guy in the middle could be Georges Gordienko.
It could be McMichael - GG - Foley.
On the left is Gordienko earlier on in his career.
George Gordienko:
Mick McMichael seems a strong possibility to me.
We all agree on Foley.
I just can't see Billy Robinson kneeling; Robinson was undershot; the guy has a more chiselled frame - and looks 15 years older than Robynson at that time.
One of the problems in identifying Gordienko is that we have hardly any photos of him, and I have seen none around 1960.
As for Hayes, that is not a facial expression of his that I remember at all.
The Ost, thank you posting that photo of Billy. Okay, now let's put these two photos together. I definitely see a strong resemblance here.
And here's this for comparison's sake as well. On the left is Al Hayes as he appeared on French TV in February 1960.
Gordon Nelson:
I'm reasonably sure the two group photos of the Scot trio were taken in Barcelona. Whenever a photo was taken by one of the local photographers he would be credited in the Barcelona paper as the one who took it. Such was the case with these two photos. The headshots were probably stock photos. The photo of the other trio is an interesting one. The photo was published in the paper on July 29 to promote the trio's matches on July 31, which ended up being the only time all three wrestled on the same Barcelona card. The same Spanish photographer mentioned above is credited as having taken the photo, which means that if he did indeed do so that must have happened on the previous Barcelona show (July 28). The report for that July 28 show doesn't mention them making an appearance on it, but the Spanish reports weren't very detailed so it's possible the trio did make an appearance that just went unreported in the paper. The Robinson photo popped up several times in the paper. Always listed as Bill Robinson (sometimes also spelled Robynson), the fine stylist from England. Having said all of that, I should point out that generally speaking Mundo Deportivo (the newspaper all these photos come from) was pretty good at listing the correct names on their wrestling photos. Pretty good, but not perfect. For example, during the course of a couple of years on a number of occasions they posted a photo of Al Hayes and identified it as Eric Husberg. I didn't catch this myself either until it was pointed out to me. The Hayes photos below are circa 1953.
Also, SaxonWolf, Jose Arroyo is definitely not pictured anywhere in the photos above. He had a very distinctive head. He'd be easy to spot, if it was him.
I don't see any reason to believe the pictures aren't Gordienko, Hayes, Foley and Robinson.
Do we know what other names Dwight J Ingleburgh used?, I don't see his name in any of the Barcelona matches in 1960, and I don't see Mick McMichael either.
They could be there under other names of course.
The man in the suit appears to me to have a shaved head (is that just me or do others agree?), which means he could be someone like Jose Arroyo?
I guess the main thing is that I think we can all agree, it is not George Gordienko.
It's fascinating detective stuff.
We can also consider the promotional aspect: would Dwight have been likely to be wrestling with those JP wrestlers?
I see that teenage chubbiness and think Mick McMichael. Wasn't Paul Lincoln already an older and more worldly-wise businessman by 1960?
Certainly those photos of the Scots don't seem to have been taken in Spain. But they would have been hard-pressed to find a stock photo of the Foley threesome, if all three were actually wrestling in Spain. I tend to think that might really be from Spain.
We need to ask Phil who started this off and clearly has other material: what can you tell us about our ramblings?
I can sort of see "Dwight" in the Wrestler stood up in the suit. It's not the clearest picture though.
What I am wondering is, would the picture of the three of them in the ring have been taken specifically to promote them being in Barcelona, or is it a stock photgraph from something else that the promoters simply used?
The one on the left, with the Teddy Boy type haircut could be Paul Lincoln (he had been wrestling in Spain in the late 50's)
Yes. "IS" being a big word. But yes, they are my best shots, + Gordon Nelson.
What do you think, after all this?
Just to be clear Anglo, are you saying Dwight J Ingleburgh, stood up, with the suit on?, and the person kneeling is George Nutall (Black Mask)?
Thanks
Yes, that photo of Dwight looks like our man in the blazer.
Yes, you are convincing me (a bit) Saxonwolf, about Spencer Churchill. It's just that I saw him wrestle so many times and he was tiny, I don't know how he carried off so many light and mid-heavyweight bouts. I just think that the kneeling man has longer limbs.
Don't we have differing opinions here! I am amazed The Ost thinks that's Billy, but to each his own.
I'll stick with Black Mask - see the boxer's clenched fists - but I guess we will never know for sure.
For the Wrestler standing in the middle, in a suit, thinking of a tall, shaven headed wrestler who would have been in the UK/Europe around 1960, looks like it could be Kurt Stein?
I think the Billy Robinson photo is Billy.
You mean this weeks cover? (Sunday the 14th?), Sam Betts/Dwight Ingleburgh?
I still think the person kneeling could be a young Spencer Churchill, just judging by the shape of the mouth and nose.
Here he is, older, same shape mouth and nose, in my view.
