Probably a daft question, but what is the best bout witnessed at any of the iconic venues? one of mine would be Albert Wall v Andy Robbins at the Ice stadium in Nottingham
Well, I don't think that the Preston Public Hall would qualify as an iconic match but for most readers neither would the match. But here goes.
Wild Angus Campbell v Dirty Dominic Pye was billed as "The Match of The Century" in July 1965. I was eleven years old so I believed that. And it seemed so did many more of the Preston folk. Dad and me turned up at around 7.00 as usual. The queue was usually just across the front of the hall. Tonight it was across the front, all the way down the side and along the back of the hall.
The best match? Hard to say. But it lived up to expectations. A bloodied Angus recused by "brother" Jock emerging from somewhere. Nearly sixty years later (Gawd, we are old) it's still an iconic match for me.
I went to RAH a couple of times in the mid 70's. The bout i remember was Mick McManus v George Kidd. Was 5 x 10. Round 2 stopped as George had a cut head. So disappointed. All that way for George Kidd and only got 12 minutes................
St James Hall closed when I was 10 but I had visited the hall a few dozen times before it closed, probably seeing Rikki Starr when he was the top draw in the country against Bobby Graham complete sell out and hundreds turned away, not a great bout looking back , but as a young boy it was a great night.
I saw nothing that really stood out at Belle Vue. Kirk/Nagasaki at Bolton was more memorable than anything. I saw a Streiger/Crabtree bout at Buxton that was better than most. Wall v Davies on TV was memorable and Mick v Jackie on TV never to be forgotten and much better than their 2 matches at BelleVue.
Maybe Kendo v Howes at Belle Vue if I had to choose one and soon after their TV famous match.
Not so sure the venue being Iconic could make a match any better. You only get out what the wrestlers put in.
Rocco/Jones was always good but could be just as good in a small hall. Belle Vue was never full in the 1970's.

Why was that bout so good?
