Bob Wright worked as a gateman at the local shipyards, the Jarrow Vikings are a sculpture at the shopping centre in Jarrow and were unveiled when the shopping centre opened in the early 1960s. Bob worked as a fairly immobile heel on small independent shows.

I was there at Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, when Bob had his last bout. He got disqualified in the first round. His opponent was Keith Prosser from Middlesbrough. He was in the bar afterwards and explained that he was really retired. On the same bill, Johnny Saint beat Peter Ross, two to one. After his score, Pete said, "I think he let me".
