Last AUGUST at the KENT REUNION-I was involved in Conversation for some Time with
JOHNNY SOUTH and JOHNNY KINCAID-when they came over to join my table!-I was always
pleased to see either of them Billed on Shows I Attended but saw more of JOHNNY SOUTH!
I really Liked his Rugged Style of Wrestling-Hard-Hitting and Solid-Always made for my type of Bout!
Of course SOUTH Hailed from a very Tough City in SALFORD-and I know what a Tough City is-
I Lived and Worked in GLASGOW back in the Day!
Other Wrestlers from SOUTH's neck of the woods were equally Hard and Tough Fellas too!
And in this Thread-I'm Taking a Look at some of these Men-Many of Whom I saw Wrestle Live myself!
One of the First Notable SALFORD Grapplers Appeared regularly in the 1950's!
FRED WOOLLEY-A Strong and Capable Wrestler Who later became a Promoter in Conjunction with
DANNY FLYNN!-Here's an Early '60'S Bout Featuring FRED at TEWKESBURY in 1962!-FLYNN also
on this Bill!

Yes well observed Ron that was the intention also utilitarian could have varied opposition. Also allowed the privilege if partnering Vic when Bert not available.
It's a fine line , if you take Colin Joynson , was he a bad guy. No not really , but he could really rough it with those lifters he did. But his partner Haggerty in the Dangermen , I had down as a bad un. His act was a blindside punch and you got the sneer , the arrogance and what really irritated me about him , he slowed things down , yet they looked quite a good unit.
With Broughton Rangers , I think it was a bit like when Tony St Clair was young or even young Faulkner. There was a certain amount of protection from the older partner. Johnny South was the heavier guy so perhaps was seen to be dishing out some heavy punishment in retaliation.
If my memory serves me right though , I think the Broughton Rangers did a lot of quick tagging , always a good way to put over a good tag team.
Thanks Ron. I never saw them. I just have Johnny South pigeon-holed as a baddie and Paul Mitchell a goodie, so wondered how the tag went.
My impression of the Broughton Rangers was not Dirty , more sort of Robust.
Never saw them as bad guys.
Yes but what I mean is: did you have to wrestle dirty in tag?
The naming of teams after Rugby league teams also included the Wires Warrington team of the karilius brothers also the Rochdale Hornets Carl dane and marty Jones. All split to develop,I think this was an idea from Martin Conroy at the height of tag matches.
Johnny South could clearly be trusted to carry a main event bout and make the big name shine. Just like Haggetty and Graham and Sharron.
Now Paul Mitchell was a clean wrestler ... how did things go with the Broughton Rangers?
JIM LEWIS WITH THE SAME BELT.
Any ideas when/where this photo was taken.
FRED WOOLLEY WITH HIS BELT.
Does anyone know when this photo was taken?
Tibor didn't top many DM bills? I don't think that's an accurate statement.
Great stuff, Main Mask.
I'm astonished to see Ivor Barrett on that final poster which I believe would be 1972, by which time he had disappeared as far as I knew.
Your first Vic Stewart programme actually has three Salfordians on it. Reg Ray is there, and an unknown to me, Ken Bowers.
Then Colin Joynson also appears. He used to be billed from Cheetham Hill, which some would call part of Salfrod, like Broughton was, where the Rangers were billed from.
Jumping Jim Hussey used to be billed from Manchester, but wasn't he a Salfordian too?
The northern promoters liked putting Tibor top-of-the-bill when they booked him, didn't they. He didn't top many DM bills.
Mark Rocco was billed from Salford
WOOLLEY was around in the 1950's-Here he is on my Programme for The STAMFORD HALL-ALTRINCHAM in OCTOBER 1956!- FRED was a Regular
Performer at ALTRINCHAM for Many Years!
