Great info, thanks for making this post. Just wanted to add...1896 was a surprise to me...why they chose not a wrestler to compete in wrestling, that made very little sense. Britain had Amateur champs since early 1870s...and yes the winner of national title should have represented the country.
1900 Paris...I need to go over my files and talk to some French wrestling history experts, I think there was wrestling in 1900 but it was part of Universal Expo which was somehow related to the Olympics, same in St Louis again World Expo and Olympics shared the host city, just my little thoughts.
Just been reading through this week’s newsletter, very interesting indeed. Some good information on the history of Olympic wrestling. Unfortunately, at least here in Switzerland we don't get coverage on the T.V. channels when wrestling is taking place, funnily enough we get a lot of coverage on Judo!
