Wrestling overseas today, Ivan Penzekoff (as Cedric Hathaway) teamed up with Bret Hart and Mr. Hito, defeated the villainous team of John Foley (as Stetson wearing JR Foley), Dynamite Kid, and Duke Myers, in Regina, Canada, on this day in 1982.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1966:-
Tony Borg (Malta) v Tony Costas (Cyprus)
Tibor Szakacs (Budapest) v Big Bruno Elrington ( Portsmouth)
Wrestling came to the English midlands with the presentation of an all in wrestling show at the Palais de Danse in West Bromwich. In a match over three ten minute rounds George Faulkner beat Wilfred Granfield. Despite blood flowing from Faulkner’s forehead following a clash of heads in the first round he won with falls in the second and third round
Looking back on it now, Powerlock, the Avengers were probably Pedro and Gori Ed under bonnets. But the main event had just finished in great controversy and the heat was intense, people moving around freely on the pitch, not controlled like in a theatre. The tag went on hardly noticed.
Max Raeger didn't appear. He had been a name from The Wrestler so I was disappointed to miss him. Can't recall who subbed, but that sub could also have been an Avenger as Gori Ed was getting on a bit and not up for doubling up, I suspect.
Working overseas today, Mike Marino beat Salvador Font in Barcelona, Spain, on this day in 1950.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1968: -
Mick McManus (W) v Mick McMichael
Knockout tournament with Johnny Williams, Zoltan Boscik, Jon Cortez and Adrian Street, the winner to meet Alan Miquet for the British lightweight championship at the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Happy memories of this open air evening at The Pilot Field with Johnny Kincaid doing a marvellous sub, a first sighting of Haystacks, and a rare seventies glimpse of the original diminutive Wild Man. I wonder if I was witnessing his last bout?
Professor Eddie Stratton's roof tiles weren't very co-operative for his karate display.
I seem to recall we established this was a Kendo Nagasaki promotion.
@adrianpollard.shangri-la 6' 8" GARGANTUA reminds me of that moment in the film !Myron Breckenridge" where Mae West is walking along a line of tall, handsome, young men. "How tall are you?" she stops and asks one of them who replies, "6' 8"." Mae West throws open the door of her office saying, "Never mind the 6', come in here and tell me all about the 8"."
