It's 1976.
Could anyone get excited about this Main Event?
We all watched masked men with the usually forlorn hope of seeing an unmasking. No one could have anticipated an unmasking here.
The rest of the bill is well worth one of those nice, crisp pound notes. Wonder what happened to them?
There's not even anyone for Johnny to share a car with.
Maybe he was on holiday.
Rocco v Jones had yet to evolve into the warfare we came to know and love at that point, likewise Saint/Breaks.
Hi Main Mask
I used to get very excited about seeing Al Nicol or Count Bartelli or Buster Martin on the South Coast. So I would hope that some spectators would have been interested in seeing Johnny Czeslaw on a rare appearance on the Irish Sea coast. Quite whether it was then a magnificent bout would have depended on the two pros' professionalism. On this site in Armchair Corner there is a review called Polish Polish in which Czeslaw is outweighed and outbilled by exotic War Eagle - but Czeslaw leads the way and makes the match.
I'd tend to go with the northern promoter who decided to make that top of the bill match.
I can't recall the same Czeslaw v Nagasaki bout on a Dale Martin bill, because Southern fans would have been too aware.
Wrestling overseas today, a whole bunch of our lads, billed as the various champions of all sorts of places!
On our TV screens, on this day in 1971:-
Les Kellett (W) v Jack Martin
Mick McMichael v Dave Barrie (DKO)
I like the Preston Majestic bill. A Metropolitan champion and an English bantam champion a weight I hadn't heard of in pro wrestling. And at the bottom, "Late buses to all parts". Brilliant.
Working overseas on this day, Pete Roberts (who has cropped up in a few posts on here recently), defeated Yoshiaki Fujiwara in Osaka, Japan, on this day in 1983.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1965: -
Billy Robinson bt Billy Howes
Bobby Steele v Mike Donlevy (NC)
Rocco vs Jones would have been worth the admission alone.
