Paul Anton Vargas
1956, 1957 and 1959 Spanish visitor to Britain who kindly dropped the European middleweight title to Bolton's Bert Royal at Hanley in October, 1956. We can find no information about him winning the title. Opponents included Charlie Fisher, Black Butcher Johnson and Jean Morandi (all at the Royal Albert Hall). Worked in Germany under the name Bela Vargyas
I dont know if Paul Anton Vargas was from Spain. But if he was he was not Bela Vargyas. This was a austrian-hungarian wrestler named Harry Aaron Vargyas.
Probably born when Austria/Hungary was one empire
Thanks for the additional information Gernot and Ron, the entry has been revised. Still no more information though we did come across this entry in a Dale Martin Royal Albert Hall programme
Seem to bill him anything but Spain over here Gernot.
Budapest was popular.
But Germany and Hungary in the same month here.
And then suddenly he's from Austria here , same pose as in your photo.
Why they had to stretch it with so much imagination who knows. If he was genuinely foreign then why not just bill him as what he was.
I guess Austrian /Hungarian was good enough and Germany maybe because he worked there so much.
As for Spain , well looks like that was a rare one.
