Anglo Itlian's Croydon bill has Maxine v Street as the main event. As early as 1970 McManus and Pallo were nearing the end of their shelf life and now was the time for promoters to be planning ahead. Maxine and Street could have been cultivated as the perfect McManus-Pallo development.

I vividly remember getting this poster fifty years ago. So exciting at the time, I thought it was fabulous.

My thoughts haven't changed: super match-making; three or four bouts you don't see very often; the great Belgian; Adrian Street indicating he had truly arrived to top the bill.

And the same mystery 50 years later as to how on earth the British Heavyweight Champion could be in a support bout against a dream opponent. Outrageous!

By the way, was Buster Martin really a rugby star?

Had he been alive with those comments I reckon Jack Pye would have been a sure bet for the Government's Brexit negotiating team.
