Main Mask's Humdinger in Hull has Billy White Wolf topping a programme with exalted company:
For a while it seemed like half of Arizona was in the UK.
The ones I remember seeing were Thundercloud & White Cloud, Johnny War Eagle, Billy Two Rivers.
They could have been quadruplets!
Their wrestling styles also blur in the memory - except Johnny War Eagle who was a standout hard-hitting villain.
I am aware there were plenty of other "genuine" native Americans in British rings, and BWW here was a big name.
What memories do others have of these wrestlers? Am I right that they were all very similar?
Oh, and as it's Wrestling Heritage: can we LIST any others?
Thanks Anglo and Bill.
I like to come onto this site and share my memories. If other people enjoy them that's good.
It was just that this one poster really annoyed me.
One man's meat is another man's poison.
We don't all like the same things, and that's a good thing or what we like would soon be exhausted.
Thanks folks.
Bernard is a great asset to this forum, and his posts are always welcome
Just to clarify a few earlier points Iv remembered why I thought Don Eagle never wrestled here, the Morrell Mick and Peter double-bass was being discussed and a vet from the 50s remarked that was nothing to what Gorgeous George did to Don Eagle and that's why UK tour discussed, seems Don was charged with assault of the ref etc when plan a was replaced without hisknowledge. I mentioned the Polish Chief Thunderclound his name was Benny and he also wrestling as Thunderbird and Blood Rivers,he was a much better worker than Two Rivers an old friends proud boast that in a club in Manchester he had subdued Billy Two Rivers whilst serving in Manchester city police was brought up whenever I was in his company I never had the heart to tell him that it wasn't really Two Rivers.Lastly I'm so glad Bernard didn't disappear after unfair critism this forum would have been the poorer Iv learnt lots from his posts.
Just internet trolls, unfortunately, Bernard. I used to participate on another forum, not wrestling-related, and they had a terrible time with insults . But also senior people showing zero tolerance for others’ opinions. I was welcomed in warmly as a newbie by some but it soon became clear you had to be in one camp or anorher. I couldn’t be doing with all that, and exited.
We’ve had some issues on here, but not for a long while. Most of the negative thinkers have excluded themselves. But I can sense you were upset and that’s a shame. I just share my little story to assure you that this is part and parcel of internet life; and we are all very civil on here now. Even though with all these written words sometimes a comment can be read as sarcastic when it isn’t intended to be.
in answer to your question, we wouldn’t know as so many people sign up but they are just email addresses until they choose to tell more about themselves.
However, anyone who has a truth is invariably only too happy to share the detail. Just put it down as a crank. One wrestler on here ten years ago decided I don’t live where I said I lived and that I was lying. This forum can attract all sorts.
When i first came on here, I declared that I knew Norman Walsh,so that if I said something about him or his family, people would know that I hadn't made it up.
Someone , under the name of Whitecloud, posted some detrimental remarks.
Do the mediators know if this was the wrestler or just a fan, like me, but using a wrestler's name?
Not that I want to take it further, but just interested.
From what I saw I would reckon every bout ended with a dq, did someone say they were Mexican in a previous thread.
Yes Powerlock, they were Thundercloud & White Cloud.
They had the Hells Angels at the RAH.
A six-week tour from memory, but they got everywhere.
That's why I am trying to find out if one was Polish! What a let down ...
The early seventies found a native American tag team doing the rounds for Joint. They were disqualified at Newcastle City Hall against Jackie Pallo and Black Jack Mulligan if my memory serves me right. I cannot remember the name of the team but am sure they have come up on the forum before.
While some of these lads were genuine Native Americans (like Billy Two Rivers), many were not (unless they had some Native American ancestry in their blood line), Billy Red Eagle was Hawaiian, Billy White Wolf was from Iraq (our old pal Adnan Al-Kaissey) one of the War Clouds was Mexican, one was from Los Angeles, I think Don Eagle and Chief Thunderbird were genuine.
All harmless fun of course!
Aaah, so qualititavely you agree with me ref War Eagle. You can see his bad temper in his tv bout with Czeslaw, even wrestling clean. I saw him lose that temper in the most fantastic dust-up with Steve Viedor. He was frightening!
Main Mask sums up Two Rivers. But he somehow became the biggest name of them all.
I am intrigued by your Polish Thundercloud, Paul. Was this Thundercloud as in Thundercloud and White Cloud? I saw them tag and they were rather good, but to this day I can't forgive them giving me the slip autograph-wise - and I was an absolute hawk at that time.
I'll tell you another thing: I never saw a Red Injun smile...
And yet another thing: Native American wrestlers are a staple of wrestling. But native Australians? I never saw an Aborigine - did anyone?
Yet there were plenty of Maoris and Pacific Islanders. Aussies are so touchy about the Aborigines....
I was always under the misapprehension that Don Eagle never actually arrived in this country so Iv learned something there.Best ever N A worker was without doubt War Eagle a genuine article who wrestled like he was from Hindley.Best non genuine article was the Polish Thunderclound,Two Rivers lethargic.
Sorry Ron, I must pay more attention.
Anglo, I know that one of Thunderbird's relatives came on this site a while ago, and I repeated that story then. The relative, I believe, did give quite a bit of information, about Thunderbird's work and standing in the tribe etc, if anyone is interested.
Thanks Bernard and everyone.
No shortage of posters and names, as usual, tremendous resources shared here.
But the memories?
To answer my question?
Only War Eagle stood out for me.
Thanks Hack. At the time that I wrote that I was sure that it was Alf Rawlings, but the results did not show a Rawlings v Thunderbird match ,only one against Hussey.
The rest of it is correct.
Hi All. I saw Chief Thunderbird in the 1950's. In my previous description of this bout, I incorrectly thought that it was Alf Rawlings as his opponent.
Checking Ray's results, it turns out that it was Jimmy Hussey.
If Hack can find my post on this, read it as it is but change Rawlings to Hussey.
Now all we have to do is ask Hack nicely, Please !
Not long after Billy arrived here.
Looking at this I don't think we had any in the 1930-1950 period.
From what I can see we had three in the early 1950's before Billy two Rivers came in 1959.
So maybe Bernard saw these guys.
I'll 'Borrow' this Guy from My HOTCH-POTCH Topic to Kick Us off then
ANGLO!
