In a four bout show I always preferred it to be on third, right after the interval. However,I know some preferred it on second.Mick McManus seemed to like being on second, In a 6 or 7 bout such as RAH shows when was it on?
These days promoters get round this by having a first half and second half main event. The main event is always the final match to stop the fans leaving early
It was always third and was something to look forward to in the interval. I never thought, until now, how in other forms of entertainment the top of the bill usually came on last.
Regarding St James' the top of the bill match was always on third and the tag match, if any, finished the night in normal circumstances. There never was an official interval however in my day, just a little longer in between bouts probably designed to let the punters buy their ice cream, orange drinks and hot dogs.
I think the only times I ever saw the top of the bill bout before the interval was with McManus, and that was nearly always.
But this was in Dale Martin land where he ruled the roost. Can anyone tell me where Mick appeared when wrestling for northern promoters? If he was overnighting, he probably didn't mind going on later.
I always preferred it in the second half, at Newcastle City hall the show inevitably finished off with a tag match so top of the bill was usually straight after the interval on a four bout card or middle bout on a larger bill, but occasionally a tag match topped the bill and would always close the night.
In my days the main event was always in the second half of the programme, thus the programme was kept interesting for the spectators.
Cheers

Top of the bill was almost always third, and that seemed right. Occasionally I saw it second and that did seem a bit of a let down.

Exactly the same Power, earlier when I was there at St James' Hall.
Top of the bill always on 3rd whether a tag match or singles for the 4th bout.
