I'm too young to have seen Ernie Baldwin wrestle but certainly saw him many times as referee and M.C. on Morrell and Beresford shows. He and Ernie Lofthouse took it in turns to M.C. and run the show. The contrast could not have been greater. Baldwin was friendly and always willing to chat to the fans whereas Lofthouse was aloof and imperious.
I am also too young to have seen Billy Joyce in his heyday but did see him on Morrell and Beresford shows at King's Hall, Belle Vue when he returned briefly as a light-heavyweight. I recall bouts against Bob kirkwood, Honey Boy Zimba and Billy Howes.
I also witnessed "Sir" Alan Garfield and "Jumping" Jimmy Hussey towards the end of their careers. I would have loved to have seen those two go up against each other.
I saw both Billy Joyce and Ernest Baldwin wrestle but not against each other. Baldwin was right at the end of his wrestling career in 1964 (tagging with a young John Cox) and after that one time he became a referee and in that guise I saw him numerous times. Although he may well have been a technician rather than a showman pitting him against Joyce would have contained a certain amount of entertainment as Joyce, as well as being a brilliant wrestler, was also the master of numerous sly and underhand tricks and moves which would have raised the crowd's ire and would have had them imploring Baldwin to seek revenge.
Hi MM. I am sorry, but I never saw Billy Joyce wrestle.
This is great stuff MM, thanks for sharing. With your & Ron's contributions we are seeing more and more of the 1940's wrestling scene. Interesting to note that John Foley had been British middleweight champion in the Beaumont lineage.
Thanks MM. Don't go on a wild goose chase. I don't think that it ever happened.
But I would have liked to have seen it.
I haven't checked but I think that The Black Angel v Bert Assiratti happened at Newcastle a couple of times.
I would have liked to have seen The Black Angel v The Ghoul( John Bates).
Loser to unmask.
Place your bets for the winner.
Hi MM. I think that you might have been a little disappointed with Billy Joyce V Ernie Baldwin.
Baldwin was strong, solid and a good technician, but exciting or mind boggling-Never!
Thanks MM.
Some fantastic bills there MM.Any for Bartelli vs Assirati?According to KW they did meet a few times.
