Being a Top Venue and a 6,000 Seater Arena All Our Top Wrestlers had many Matches at the
KINGS HALL- Along with quite a lot of Wrestlers from Overseas Appearing now and again too!
This Ensured that the QUALITY of Professional Wrestling at the Hall was always of a very High Standard
-especially from 1960 onwards!-SATURDAY Nite was the Main Attraction every Week!-but on occasions
Shows were put on on a FRIDAY-MONDAY and WEDNESDAY as well!-So-although rarely-you were
'Spoiled' with 3 Events over 4 Nites with just the SUNDAY with No Wrestling as the Arena was used for
Something else!!
To further Augment this Plethera of Pugilism- every so often the Top of the Bill would be a TITLE
CONTEST for one of the MOUNTEVANS Championship Belts!
So for this Special-I'm Sharing some of these Epic TITLE Confrontations which Thrilled the BELLE VUE
Faithful in the Early 1960's!-And we start with..... A Contest for the BRITISH HEAVY-MIDDLEWEIGHT
Title between the then Holder-ERIC TAYLOR and-a Future Champion-CLAYTON THOMSON!!
This was the Main Bout on SATURDAY's Show on 28TH OCTOBER 1961!- Result is shown!!
MAIN MASK
I spent 1980 in Germany!
Was the Viedor/Davies match duly televised?
Great poster, Main Mask. Good that such a fine collection is in the hands of someone who shares it so generously in this museum of ours.
Cooper and Sanders doing their refined thing Up North. Jon Cortez enriching any bill. The tag would have been a riot. But why did they just sling in a photo of Johnny Wilson for no apparent reason?
At last - a Belle Vue poster with the promoter named.
Great stuff MM and I have just noticed a championship match in 1963 along with another sensation Cassio v Doctor Death. Would love to hear that one explained.
Jack Pye retired in 1963 although he did an odd brief comeback.
Exactly which month he retired , I don't know but his schedule was probably limited. I do have him as late as November at Belle Vue.
Could this have been his last time at Belle Vue.
You have to laugh , the following week Pye tagged with Bruno against Ian Campbell and Hussey at Liverpool.
And quite right too. He was the one who pul;lled them in week after week.
It's Easter this weekend. Look at 1961 Belle Vue. This when wrestling was running high.
Jack Pye gets Saturday Night Top of the Bill
"Mr Perfect England" must be Johnny "Muscles' England I guess?
Main Mask - I will guess that is you, front and central in the picture, blue and white zip jacket on.
Shocked to see Kwango billed as black in the decimal era in that last one. Surely this was taboo at that time.
Notceable that Jack Pye profited from Joyce and Robinson going the full distance by just doing the two and a bit rounds himself.
Did Billy Robinson ever lose to Billy Joyce by straight falls?
Another nice set, Main Mask, thank you. Some good new photos, too.
The big shock for me is seeing the generally invincible Pat Barrett losing 1-2 to Jumping Jim Hussey - who lost far more than he won.
GENERAL NOTE TO OTHERS: Make sure you click LOAD MORE REPLIES above to reveal the full collection.
Great stuff MM, always enjoy seeing these programmes. Filled in a couple of gaps for me. Will add these to the Gallery later today.
Our next Championship Match is one of a 'Mini-Series'- for the BRITISH
MIDDLEWEIGHT Title!-During this 'Series' the Belt changed hands and back 3
Times!!-See my Earlier FORUM Topic on this particular Sequence of Bouts...
