JACKIE PALLO caused something of a Sensation when he started appearing in
STRIPED Wrestling Trunks and GOLD Coloured Wrestling Boots-we won't include
the Ribbons! But was he the FIRST Wrestler to abandon long dressing gowns and
plain Wrestling Gear?
Does anyone know another Wrestler who beat him to this 'New Glitzy Look?
The 'DAZZLER' perhaps?
MAIN MASK
Of course, long before John Naylor appeared in gold ring jacket, trunks and boots, there was fellow Wiganite "Romeo" Joe Critchley who would often walk down the aisle with a bunch of daffodils handing them out to ladies in the audience.
I copied the idea when I booked Ezra to work for me in a bout against Chris Mc.Neil at Walsall Football Club on The Pleck. I billed Ezra, much to his surprise when he arrived at the venue, as Banana Bill and persuaded him to walk to the ring with a large bunch of bananas, handing them to ladies in the audience as he walked down the aisle.
I recall one rather large lady shouting, "What am I supposed to do with this?" and a club member being reprimanded by the concert secretary John Wilson for his ribald reply.
Masambula had leopardskin from 1952.
Golden Ace John Naylor, followed suit with a gold robe, gold trunks, and gold boots.
I think the Golden Ace, Laurence Chappell, had golden boots at one point
Mike Marino was the first wrestler that I saw come to the ring in a thick woollen sweater. I was told that it was because he had a heavy cold.
I remembered it because it was so different from the long dressing gowns of the time.
The short jackets came in later.
I think that little swagger of the head sold him above all else. He oozed confidence.
Jackie Mr. TV Pallo, certainly caused a stir when he first appeared on tv. Getting noticed in Glittery Robes, and the striped trunks which he became famous for. All part of the act, and wanting to be noticed. Clearly, it worked and the rest is history. My Father, recalls the velvet ribbon tied in the hair with the pony tail intact. And then the famous gold wrestling boots.
Is this guy Glitzy enough Adrian. Year 1939
Not sure about Glitzy , but certainly they did not all have dressing gowns.
