Recently I found online a part of the picture which showed an early 1900s (I think that) educational catch wrestling poster, I am attaching it below. That poster mentions a certain wrestler - 'FRED DAVIS CHAMPION d'ANGLETERRE, de...'. This stands for 'Fred Davies (would be right spelling I assume) champion wrestler of England', weight class is not specified (missed from my image), but by looking at the image I can tell that he was under 140lb weight limit.
Would highly appreciate help with identifying that wrestler. Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Russian Concussion
Some more information has come to light. Fred Davis was indeed a catch as catch can wrestler in the early 1900s, and a member of the Hammersmith Amateur Wrestling Club, having been born in Liverpool on 22nd November, 1986. He represented Britain in the 1908 Olympics. He was placed joint 5th in the 1908 freestyle bantamweight competition. He defeated Frederick Knight in the first round and lost to the eventual bronze medal winner, Aubert Cote in the second round.
He spent the 1910s living in France but was back in London by the mid 1920s. He was a professional referee in the 1930s. He died on 21st May, 1960.
Fred Davis was, according to Oakeley,a 1930s referee who was also President of Oakeley/Irslinger's British Wrestling Association. The Daily Mirror did say he was a champion wrestler.
