Most of Us loved to Watch Tag Wrestling and we were lucky to have some Great Tag
Combos-apart from the ROYALS-Yawn Yawn!!
We were even Treated to TAG TEAM K.O.Tournaments in the same Nite which could
certainly spice up a Bill!
But instead of sticking with this Winning Formula and NOT withstanding the fact that an
Official Tag Team Championship wasn't inaugurated-LINCOLN DID do this-and Yes I know
they would have only given it to the ROYALS- Yawn Yawn-ANOTHER Pair of Prime
Candidates for being Over-rated!-the Promoters had been watching too much American
Wrestling!-In their Wisdom-NOT-They decide to introduce HANDICAP TAG MATCHES!!
These usually consisted of ONE Big Guy against TWO Smaller Guys!!
So how about WAYNE BRIDGES vs.MICK MCMANUS AND!! BRIAN MAXINE???
Incidentally 2 more Arch Rivals for TAGGING WITH THE ENEMY!!
On paper 2 Thuggish Wrestlers like these Guys should have been able to beat up BRIDGES
and Tire him out while they could take a rest?? Or was WAYNE'S 17 Stone 5 Pounds too much Weight for these 2 'mere' Middleweights??
And Who Won?-Programme to Follow!
Did Anyone see one of these HANDICAP TAG MATCHES? Who were the Wrestlers?
MAIN MASK
Totally devalued the pair in my opinion. Another example was Kick Kik Lee v Finlay and Sid Cooper. Totally disrepectful to Finlay and a waste of Sid's talent.
Another on youtube is Haystacks v the Wilson Brothers. I guess this made a bit more sense, but in the end it was a let down with Jonny making inroads before his less experienced borther is quashed.
Well, here's the programme provided by Main Mask; and it's a surprise for me. My only knowledge of 2 v 1 were on independent shows with The Monster taking on two lighter men.
Main Masks programme is indeed Bridges v McManus and Maxine. What on earth were they thinking about. Did these three sleep that night after this nonsense.
It wouldn't happen in the proper Dale Martin days.
I can vaguely remember seeing Haystacks fighting Viedor and Bridges and feeling quite excited at the prospect but you're right, it just didn't work and lacked any real impact. I'm not sure I'd call The Royals over rated, quite frankly they weren't even that good! And I'm surprised they found a dressing room big enough for their egos.
Thankfully no.
However the worst thing I ever saw in the name of extreme gimmicks was in an American magazine around 1964 which featured two teams of 4 wrestlers fighting on a floating ring with each man wearing a single boxing glove!! Mercifully this never it's way to these shores (that I know of)
I didn't like them either. They usually had surprise results (meaning implausible) and were merely sensationalist hype on the posters.
Quite demeaning for some of the wrestlers.
Just desperation setting in. Poor Haystacks had to carry loads ....
Please don't go off searching guys, it's not worth it, but I'd guess these 2v1s crept in on a regular basis around 1976.
Never . Because it is another promoter's dream for "Progress". When they think that the fans want something new, someone thinks up a ridiculous idea.
However I have seen 2 or 3 handicap k.o. competitions.
Even though Norman Walsh won most of the early ones at Newcastle, I didn't like those either.
