The Plaza Cinema is a listed building built in 1940.
Opportunist Max Crabtree took his promotion there in 1960.
Was he confident of filling the 1450 seats , he certainly was a great one for advertising.
Enjoy a few bills from his short lived venture , I think about 1958-1961.
The photo of the queues is fabulous.
Some great bills there Ron. These illustrate that Max could be a creative promoter and he's using some very good wrestlers here, plus another Tarzan - we should start a collection. Yorkshire seems a more likely home than Africa for Tarzan. Look at the rest of the bill Bennett, Hinchcliffe, Goodman and Craddock living in Barnsley. Woolley in Salford. Zolly lived in Huddersfield and worked at ICI in the late 50s so I'm guessing he was still there in 1960. That leaves Gene Jansen. He was around in 1960/61 and all the matches I can see, which aren't many are for Jack Taylor or Max Crabtree, so he's looking like another Yorkshireman.
It's a similar story with the next one Caulder, Sands, Armstrong, Elahi from Yorkshire. Ghoul and Tunney from Lancashire. I don't know Sterling. So we have a question of did Joe Murphy have a Yorkshire link?
It's the same all the way through. Max didn't like spending too much on petrol money when cars could be shared for the long journey to Port Talbot. There would be more local wrestlers but I guess it also shows his connections as a new promoter. We have Capelli and Tani from the south who he would know.
