This article heralds the arrival of Paul Lincoln fighters on TV. Alan Sarjeant is due to fight Mcmanus live who the article reminds us has never lost on TV. Sarjeant believes he can win and from a 1966 perspective this would have seemed a fight well worth watching.
You Tube has the 1974 match between these two with Walton telling us the fans sense an upset. Is it not suprising that by the mid 1970's things seemed a bit repetitive and stale?
1965 was undoubtedly the peak year for TV viewers and also broadcasts on BBC2
Yes I agree with that Peter. Maybe the whole of the 1960s but I don't remember. that half of the decade. The second half of the 1960s and first couple of years of the 70s were as good I think. But audiences and number of shows began to fall from 1965 onwards.
In retrospect the mid 1960's was the most exciting time to most fans
I don't think i would have considered this a particularly interesting match in 1966 because Sarjeant was largely unknown. Having said that I am speaking from a northern perspective and it may well have been different had I seen Alan at work in the south. What was of general interest in 1966 was the move of independents to Joint and seeing how well they did. As an independent fan these were exciting days.
