OK let me in on this. Could someone kindly explain what it was Peter Preston did in his bout with Mick McManus that has become such a talking point? Im guessing he went of script and beat up Mick or something along those lines. Is that correct? If so what the story behind it? Cheers.

you could tell in the last 2 rounds something was wrong as McManus was defending himself and trying to stay out of trouble and Preston seemed to be throwing in different way then normal
I don't understand this. Surely the agreement would have been Preston first fall McManus two and three. He must have known well before the final round things had gone wrong.
Wouldn’t you like to have been a fly on the wall in the dressing room after that bout. I wonder if the TV footage is still floating around out there somewhere ...
I don't think the Preston win was ever mentioned in The Wrestler. Peter Preston reckoned he was called to a Joint Promotions meeting in Leeds where he was officially reprimanded. But George DeRelwyskow was the first to ring him the next morning and say he would be booking him. He also went on to become a giant killing bill topper for Norman Morrell. Peter Preston and Norman Morrell did not like Dale Martin Promotions. Whether it was Mick personally he didn't like I don't recall him saying, or whether beating Mick was a way of getting at Dale Martin.
I saw it , but at the time it held no significance as I did not have a clue about the inner workings of the game. Similar , it was about 5 years before I got up to date on Nagasaki unmasking Bartelli because Bartelli was never on TV.
That's just the way it was in those days. News seldom traveled.
I saw it only on television Frank, and it did seem pretty amazing at the time. On Granada tv the whole match was shown but it was said by some on the forum previously that in some areas the cameras cut away.
yes
Thanks Hack. Interesting bout to say the least. Learning a lot about Mick McManus that I never knew just lately. Seems Peter took the opportunity to bring Mick down a peg or two and I can imagine he got a good few pats on the back from others in the business for that one. Wouldn’t want to spill Peters pint would you! Did anyone here actually see this bout?
Preston did not go off script, just was not the same one as McManus had. here in Deep South they did not fade out but showed complete shenanigans. you could tell from last 2 rounds something was wrong
Not a daft question at all. McManus was planned to win, of course, as he always did on tv in those days. Preston took the first fall, as planned, but then didn't go down to McManus. Preston was still leading as they went into the last round and so McManus got himself disqualified to avoid a falls defeat.

am sure if you read Peter preston's account you will see that that nice Norman Morrell asked him to and him a some money. he was told not to break McManus legs. so depending what script he did not go off script
