Yes, he'd only had the bonnet for a couple of years and wouldn't have envisaged such a long run. His masked predecessors hadn't lasted long.
All those Southend Gliderdrome appearances probably had to do with the wrestler looking for different career paths.
He probably discovered that only the protective arm of Uncle Arthur could give him the invincibility he craved. It probably also explains why he wasn't on Dale Martin bills: they couldn't be doing with this Norvener coming down occasionally and ripping through their talent around the halls where that same talent would each have to pull in audiences 4, 5, 6 or 7 times a year each. I'm talking fifties Mancelli, Garfield, Fisher, Hayes and the likes.
I wonder if masked Count Bartelli ever faced the formidable Bill Torontos? (Just to unite so many of these current threads...)
That seems a feasible shout over Dale Martin's reluctance to use Bartelli, though does assume the reluctance on their part. It may be that he didn't want to travel or they didn't pay enough. Beware of "all those Southend Gliderdome appearances." We have no evidence of any more.

It happened to Ian Gilmour in both his singles bouts as Kamikaze, but he didn't have to unmask even against mean heels that would have LOVED to destroy the "new Kung Fu".
Count Bartellli was a gentleman blue-eye so presumably this was a clean match so presumably Mike Marino asked that Bartelli be allowed to keep his mask. Billy Robinson is supposed to have given Kendo Nagasaki a similar gratis to keep his mask come what may, because of the respect between the two men (resulting from Billy and Peter Thornley being friends and regular training partners outside of the ring in Wigan.) and Billy being a bit of a Dirty Harry anti-babyface who enjoyed hurting opponents (both in kayfabe and real life) and didn't mind the opponent getting dirty because he frankly liked a good dirty scrap too.
A gem of a find Ron. Makes you wonder if it was a genuine accident, Relwyskow wanting to nobble Wryton's masked star or a Barrelli rebellion? Or can you think of other reasons for this odd result?
Hard to figure it out. Did we ever discuss Bartelli and his fame/impact with Bernard who could probably tell us if Bartelli was significant outside Wryton Land at this stage. We know that Marino was "The GoldenBoy" and I expect that might be the reason he was not going down to Bartelli. But why not a draw. Was it because nobody would know outside Aberdeen. Would the fans of Aberdeen have any reason to know of a custom that a beaten masked man should unmask. Or had they either never had a masked man or a beaten one. (Well they did have the Ghoul)
We know now they all lost , even Kendo and it was kept low key. Bert Assirati when at the elite level also had to lose, and reading about him, and with youtube evidence , seemed to choose to charge his man low , go through the ropes and either just fail to beat the count or get back so groggy that he was slammed for the winner.
It's always been about what was acceptable to not deflate the persona. Two Rivers chopped everyone , but Streiger managed to recover to do a low punch to get disqualified. All part of the game.
I think at this point in time the longest masked run must be The Green Asp (Van Wurden) what was the promoters intentions. Or did Bartelli have total creative control over his masked status.
All this is probably why today , a few of us enthusiasts are still wrapped up in debating it all , still with some considerable enjoyment.
No sign in the report that Marino would not accept the victory.I think Bartelli just thought , "What the hell" and gave him this one.
Ron always tells us that where there's one there are others.
Well. Try this.
Bill Garnon beats Bartelli in Fishguard. Bill Garnon was local so it is believable. This was from Ray Plunkett so there's no evidence.
One month after the Marino defeat. Time for Arthur Wright to get a grip.
1951 April 11th FISHGUARD KO .... Bill Garnon 1-0 Wally Seddon .... Dave Armstrong 1-0 McMaster .... Vic Hessle 1-0 Orford .... Count Bartelli 1-0 Jim Hussey .... Bill Garnon bt Vic Hessle …. Count Bartelli 1-1 Dave Armstrong F .... Bill Garnon bt Count Bartelli
