Have to admit I had a bit of a soft spot for this character as he used to make me laugh. He's a bit of a man of mystery to me, what's known about him? was he ever involved in a proper tear up? was he a good wrestler? or was it always the comedy route?
I would imagine him and Les Kellet could have put together a good tag team inventing all kinds of scenarios to make us laugh. Sham it never happened … or did it?
Thanks mate (and thanks Hack for the link), many years ago, like most of us, I saw Catweazle and wondered how he had ever made it to the pro ranks, with his seeming lack of any skill and his comedy routine. Even his name was based on a TV character that was only on TV between 1970-1971, so a lot of younger fans in the 80's would not even make that connection.
Turned out he could actually wrestle, and I am sure, McManus hand picked him for the final match.
Thanks SaxonWolf/Hack. Interesting story I never knew about.
I wrote a piece on Catweazle in the thread about the last match of Mick McManus.
Actually I can't remember ever seeing Les in a tag, did it ever happen? I wasn't a huge fan of the comedy matches but they were ok now n then. better than two blue eyes who would spend half the match shaking hands zzzzzzzzz
Blimey Adrian, your house must be full of posters!
I don't think it would have worked, Les was a good wrestler who used comedy but it was very skilful, Catweazle less so, tag matches would have descended into farce, singles matches give the opponents a better chance to shine . Any attraction I believe would have quickly worn off. Both better off as singles wrestlers.
