I have a taxi driver who is self-employed and I call upon him regularly to take me various places. He knows me as a jazz promoter as that is what I have been doing for the past thirty years. However, somehow, the other day the topic of professional wrestling came up and I mentioned that I had promoted wrestling for eleven years between 1976 - 1987.
That led to him telling me that his oldest customer, a Mr.Mac.Tavish from Alderley Edge who is 96, used to be a professional wrestler and worked as Chic Povey. He has quite a broad accent and Purvey could easily be confused with Povey. The age would be about right as well but your information on Chic Purvey informs us that he died in 1996 at the age of 69.
The taxi driver believed he was telling me the truth. It is probably Mr.Mac.Tavish fantasising in his twilight years. However, I didn't think there would be any harm in running it past you and seeing if there are any takers. Could there be some grain of truth somewhere in any of this? The driver passed on some anecdotes that Mr.Mac.Tavish had shared with him that certainly showed that he had some knowledge of the game.
I haven't seen my taxi driver friend for a while but this has possibilities. Harvey/Purvey. Mc.Kay/Mc.Tavish. Mobberley/Alderley Edge.
It's not Chick he passed in 96,it's certainly not Emile.I wonder ithe guy is Charley Harvey aka Jock McKay trained possibly by Tommy Mann lived Southport then Mobberley age about right.
photo of Chic Purvey with the Belle Vue Cup would be highly appreciated. Thanks.
Chic Purveys match versus Terry Nyland included in the October 1964 episode of Coronation St Ogden v Ian Campbell is now on You Tube
It wouldn’t be the first time: The Death of the Fake Stan Lane
I think Emile Poilve is a Stockport man. Ron's news of the obituary in The Dundee Courier seems pretty definitive. Probably an elderly man in his twilight years who had been a wrestling fan doing a bit of fantasising. Hope I haven't wasted too much time.
Emile Poilve?
Chick Purvey was born and died in Dundee and his obituary (1996) was in the Dundee Courier. There was no indication that his name was anything other than Chic Purvey.
Interesting Graham. It's late. Ten to midnight. Worth a look tomorrow.
