A snippet that came to my attention yesterday is that the above individual (nephew of the original) will debut on AEW Collision tonight. Not sure when/if it airs in the UK, but it’ll be on TBS tonight in the US.
The match versus Dax Harwood is already on You Tube and has already attracted over 90,000 views. In reality the only wrestlers who are "long gone" are those with no matches on the internet. Any wrestler with just one match on You Tube is constantly available to be compared with any any present day wrestler using the same name.
Having attended live matches of both nephews they are very impressive
I watched the match. Striking resemblance to his uncle at that age, some similarities in style but not a “carbon copy”. Nigel McGuinness on commentary mentioned that he had been trained by Marty. Gave a good account of himself against a heavier opponent in Dax Harwood who bears an uncanny resemblance to the shaven-headed incarnation of Terry Rudge! From chatting to him on social media, he’s a fan of Terry and his work.
I really think giving him that name is going to make it harder for him in the long run, they could have incorporated the name into his own for a tribute to his uncle, maybe 'Dynamite Tommy Billington' . I wonder if AEW have signed the other brother Mark as they normally come as a package.
I don't know who decided to saddle him with his uncles ring name but I don't think it's a wise move. He will be forever trying to live up to the name in the ring if he can.
I have seen him a couple of times with his brother in the Billington Bulldogs, unless his style has changed he doesn't wrestle like his uncle either. I do know Marty Jones helped train them.
I know nothing about this Tommy Billington but tend to agree with you Powerlock. This name can be nothing more than a handicap, building up expectations rather than allow him to capitalise on his own talent. In the past names were re-used but the originals were usually long gone and there was no expectation to live up to the name. I spoke to a modern age Red Brokau and he didn't even know that his was a recycled name.
