Greetings grapple fans
I have recently watched a brilliant and most entertaining utube match that featured the great, but sadly now deceased, Catweazle (Gary Cooper) v the Gaylord Steve Peacock.
Can anyone help with the whereabouts of Steve Peacock, who in that particular match was just about as comical as Catweazle himself?
Thanks,
Stephen Davis.
Steve Peacock passed away a few years ago, his real name was not Les Cassidy...as stated by bernardlawniczak74
I speak to his daughter Toya Pastusiak occasionally ...thats his real surname
Steve Peacock was originally from Barrhead, 5 miles south of Paisley, real name was Les Cassidy, a good friend........
Thanks guys,
Some interesting comments.
I had no idea that Steve Peacock had died, nor did I know that he had at one time tagged with Bobby Barron as the Hells Angels.
Another sad loss to the world of wrestling.
Steve Young/Skull Murphy resembles Judas Priest Singer Rob Halford in both their respective early years!
Of course, Crabtree loved to copy American wrestling names. As a boy I recall photos of the original Skull Murphy in my copies of Pro Wrestling Illustrated (along with the likes of Greg Valentine and Black Jack Mulligan).
1974 or 1975 I went along each week to a Bobby Barron show in Blackpool, He regularly used the name Hells Angels for himself and somebody else, whether it was Steve Young or Steve Peacock I don't know.
As for the shock Steve Young photo, my shock was when I saw that nice boy turn into Skull!
This page takes me back. When timekeeping for Dixon, part of my duties included going round the audience before the show started selling "programmes" which were printed booklets of stars at the time with a hastily-typed sheet inserted giving details of the night's contests. In the interval I would go round with raffle tickets. In fairness, Dixon does not label Barron and Young as "Hells Angels" here but he certainly did when introducing them in the ring. As I recall, Young partnered Adrian as "The Hells Angels" for Joint before Bobby Barnes became his regular partner.
Now that I come to think of it, Jack Taylor also put out his own Hells Angels team at the time captained by a wrestler called Steve Sweet but I never saw them.
I haven't read any of Adrian's books but if he says that he copywrighted the name, then he must have done so. However, long before Street or Barnes or Young, Hells Angels was the name given to an aggressive group of American motorcycle riders who took part in initiation ceremonies which included cutting themselves and swapping blood and drinking each other's wee wee.
I never saw a Crabtree show in which Barron and Peacock were billed as The Hells Angels. In fact, I don't believe that Bobby Barron ever worked for Max Crabtree (certainly not as Bobby Barron). When I refereed The Hells Angels (Barron and Peacock) at Diamond Lil's Showbar in Morecambe, it was a Bobby Barron promotion. Adrian either did not know about it or didn't care because he also worked for Bobby Barron and they were billed as Hells Angels (I promoted them as such at Halton British Legion against The Romanies (Max Raeger and Pedro the Gypsy)). I have also seconded and timekept for Brian Dixon and Al Miquet on shows where The Hells Angels were Bobby Barron and Steve Young.
All Steve Peacock was was a decent enough working class lad trying to make a living as a professional wrestler. I don't claim that he was an innovator. He was reliable and could be trusted in the ring.
I got to know Steve Peacock quite well through refereeing for Bobby Barron at Pontin's, Prestatyn, and one or two other places. He tagged with Barron (often as The Hells Angels) and was a good worker without any side. For some reason, he didn't get on so well with Orig Williams and they had a huge falling out with Peacock promising Orig that he would turn up at his funeral and use his grave as a lavatory. As it turned out, I think Peacock predeceased him.
Sadly Steve died in 2006 ,I think the confusion may be that Jackie Glitterboy Evans received award at Blackpool.
