God bless our Heritage friend Bob Leonard, R.I.P. For the standards of The Wrestler this was an extraordinarily detailed report of Portz v Funk.
Yet compare it to Ron Historyo's account of Portz in Canada to see how much we have moved on. Keeping up the illusion of exclusivity of this match we now known, thanks to Ron, this was a routine carried around the Stampede circuit for a week
Does anyone know if there old Stampede recordings from Canada out there ? Would be great to see some of the 60s/70s stuff with wrestlers such as Portz, Thornton, Robinson etc in their heyday
It's good to have you joining in with us and sharing your memories Poolsead1. As I mentioned to Bernard the other day computer things are only easy if you know which button to press. Otherwise they are evil creatures invented to make us feel stupid.
Many of the main contributors to Heritage started out feeling they had little to offer, but the memories slowly come back. So just join in, and if you want to know something just ask.
I've noticed lately that some posts are not coming up in chronological order.Any reason why this is happening?
I think what you're seeing Bernard is a quirk (well I think of it of a quirk) of this "feature" that differentiates between replies and comments. Personally I find it annoying and confusing.
If you click "Reply" your comment will attach itself to the post above and stay in that position. It will also hide itself after others have added to it. For example if you "reply" at 05:00 on Friday to a comment posted on Monday it will attach itself to the Monday comment and display itself above any Tuesday to Thursday posts. To have all posts displayed chronologically (and not hide themselves) it would require everyone ignoring the Reply button and always using the "Write a Comment" box at the end of the topic."
If you wanted to reply to a specific post you could always use cut and past as I have with you above.
Thank you for doing that now all wrestling heritage members can see them. And some of us ( myself included) are not that great with computer technology. You must be very proud of Wrestling Heritage site it covers so many aspects of post war wrestling in the UK in incredible detail. I was conscious I was becoming a bit of a pain banging on about the french blog but the two overlap to a degree. Remember the best ever documentary on the Second World War? Granada tv‘s THE WORLD AT WAR? And how it portrayed all aspects of the war from all over the world? And how you got interviews with survivors and the war from the German perspective as well? ( to me it should be compulsory viewing part of their education for all school children). Well try and think of these late fifties / early sixties TV bouts as parts of the overall picture, a chance to see exactly what it was like it is different but I think as close as can get to experience the times then.
I do agree, every bout is a bonus , great to see that Bert Royal one for example and even better for me , I have been watching all the 1980's stuff on youtube and enjoying most of it. I finished round about 1978. We lost a lot of great wrestlers , some to USA and some spent a lot of time in Europe. Most of the good men toured. We just could not pay our boys good enough money to keep the talent we had.
UK wrestling has survived and changed but the sheer number of Halls with a show on most weeks was massive in the Golden age.
I did a few weeks where I went to four live shows.
One final point as a researcher , The quality of advertising in most papers after about 1975 really did tail off , to such an extent that often wrestlers were advertised as a list without who against who or any other details. How poor.
@poolstead1 Just saw your post, and I believe the researcher you're referring to is me. I thought I'd pop in and add a quick link to my Spanish research in case anyone might be interested in checking it out.You can find my Spanish research at the link below, along with other European pro wrestling research that I've done over the years:https://bit.ly/3gpwEar (link to the WrestlingClassics message board)
@poolstead1 Disagree with the comment regarding shots of the crowd. The commentator describes the excitement/anger/response of the fans and the advice given to the wrestlers." Break his arm, rough him up". In the early years from 1956 the crowd was almost entirely men some of whom looked tougher than the wrestlers .As the years went by the crowd became more representative of the general population possibly reflecting the fact that it was seen as more of a spectacle than sport
@Peter you have the advantage of understanding the language so it will make a lot more sense to you. To myself it just seems for some reason ( unknown) the camera is taken away from the action in the ring at crucial moments back to the commentator for what seems an undeterminable time sometimes when it pans back to the ring the action as moved on! I do find it fascinating to see the french audience however, again, personally I have no idea what they are saying but those near the ringside who come up to the ring sometimes try and hit the wrestlers etc, it looks pretty hairy when they start to mob around the wrestlers. I wonder what Kent would have thought?😁
Most of these matches are "unlisted". This means the Segunda Caida Blog is the only place to view each Wednesday on the home page with the link to You Tube
Fair comment. Honestly I struggled finding the blog myself and when I was asked to post a quiz question with a picture for your quiz time question it was beyond my capabilities! 😱 One of the problems of being a PRE COMPUTER Pupil generation I am afraid
Glad you explained that I was not sure and struggled understanding what had happened and how it ended! I am astonished (at what appears to me anyhow ) the lukewarm reception on this site to some of these bouts on this French site by the members. The posters that are put up are fantastic particularly love the old posters. But NOTHING compares to seeing these stars of yesteryear wrestling live and at their peak. Historically it is huge watching PORTZ v LEDUC really highlights how the wrestling style as changed in the last sixty years. Of course this golden age as gone and will never return. Perhaps the style is too static for some tastes....I don’t agree this bout was technical excellent and very enjoyable I loved watching it. And I repeat it’s the nearest we can get ....approach the early sixties. Oh well Hey Ho....

Stampede Days
Thanks for the link Ron. Sadness watching it, though, with the thought of what became of him.
Here is Billington in 1979 in Stampede.

This link should show you a few and also his son Garfield Portz
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=geof+portz+wrestling
Keep the French stuff coming , some oldies I would love to see. Francis StClair Gregory would be interesting. More on Assirati as well.
Quite a few wrestlers from these French TV matches are part of the A-Z of this website
They are splendid matches but well hidden and that's why the response has been poor.
I've put a link to the Segunda Caida blog on our links page. The links can be found under the home tab on the Wrestling Heritage pages.

The link to youtube is vital.
I had trouble finding this but here it is.
It's the second match on the tape , I thought a bit slow , some better stuff with Portz in USA is available.
Good sold wrestler , very capable , but sometimes came across as not so spectacular. Hence only a short shot at GB champ. Did great in Stampede.

"... I am astonished (at what appears to me anyhow ) the lukewarm reception on this site to some of these bouts on this French site by the members..."
Maybe if people posted the link to where people could watch them, it would help?
Not everyone reads the Segunda Caida blog and not everyone knows where to find the French matches on Youtube.
Just saying.......
Portz is very popular with the Parisian fans.So much so that Leduc refuses to accept the victory ten seconds before the end of this intense match
You're very repetitive of late Bernard😁
That photo reminds me of Sean Connery !
