I also remember Atholl Oakeley saying in his autobiography that Jack Sherry was the Greatest and Strongest Wrestler of modern times. But on the strongest side of Wrestling the evidence points to Bert Assirati during that era.
thank you so much for making this post. how often we hear of undefeated bulgarian koloff, undefeated russian padubny, undefeated americans gotch lewis pesek and etc etc many other "undefeated greatest shooters of all times". I do highly recommend to watch sherry before calling him anything extraordinaire just as I do recommend everyone to watch koloff and lewis and etc. videos exist and are pretty darn available online. those "champs" were nothing but regular all-in rasslin performers not anyhow better than hundreds if not thousands of others...they were NOT olympians for us to consider their actual sporting record. omg how tired I am of all those "undefeated" "shooters" and etc never existing herculeses of the past. why wouldnt we just enjoy watching pro wrestling. or we simply cannot, or we arent really into pro wrestling, are we? gonna make a post on this...of course to entertain all of you my friends. hahahaha
I would think that the vast majority of the people who went to watch Wrestling, in Britain, when Sherry was over here, would not have access to American newspapers, so wouldn't have seen any results of any of his matches, so all his losses in the 1920's would be unknown to them. Oakeley would have known, of course.
Oakeley met Pojello and Sherry when he wrestled in America and later brought them over here. He would have known exactly who they were and what they could do. Oakeley created an invincible Sherry. The answer is that he would have known, and if he hadn't known he wouldn't care because his interest was only in building up the business over here, and an unbeatable Sherry was part of that strategy.
My own research has not revealed Sherry being beaten on British soil though , but that's up to the promoter. I don't find Doug Clark being beaten by a Brit , but he went to Australia and started to learn a new level especially with Tom Lurich. Fighting outside the ring , causing riots , blood etc and near the end of his career it was probably the money that counted , so Clark seemed happy to lose matches over there.
For that same reason , I believe Clark was happy to go down to Sherry in multiple matches at Belle Vue and in some matches looking soundly beaten , perhaps covered in blood. It's my view it was all an arrangement.
Max Krauser had a match with Sherry. A ten round draw and then an extra two rounds. Think in the kayfabe if you want , because these were hard times , but the reality was surly that the prometer decided the result with the men having to agree.
No sign that Assirati fought these two , but Assirati took a couple of years out or so , and it's easy to say they ducked him , or indeed he ducked them.
Only my own view , but it was either Assirati's unavailability or politics.
Then again , maybe they did all meet and we have not thus far found the results.
Oakeley made Sherry invincible , in the same way he made Carver Doone a one night only sensation. Once seen ,in each town , probably dismissed that he had poor skills.
Sherry's window in time over here was quite small compared to the long reigns of Clark and Assirati as British champions.

Not if you read Oakeley's book.

Wrestling can be anything you want it to be.
